Shooting? We don't need no stinking shooting.

But seriously...that's why I want Bede. UMass needs a shooter with no conscience. Some will say James Jimmy Life had no conscience but the last player to truly have no conscience and play for UMass was Jim McCoy. We need another.

Interestingly enough Unique had this pinned on his twitter account. Maybe there is some contact between them. Either way great commit. welcome aboard.

Saul Phiri, Chris Baldwin, Mark Gasperini and Wabissa Bede are all heading to UMass' campus tonight.

Nowhere in any scouting reports did it say he bears an uncanny resemblance to The Wire's Marlo Stanfield. That would have been the first thing I mentioned if I was a scout. That might explain why I'm not one, though.

In response to UMass 87, IMO Travieso was the best shooter we have had here in a long while and maybe ever, but don't discount Mack or Harris. They all had much better range than McCoy who made twos in bunches but rarely made a three. Carmelo's range was insane and unlimited. He once scored 13 points in 2 minutes against St. Bonnie at their place. He was automatic from three on a team playing against some of the best teams in the country on a regular basis.

rayers - I didn't say best shooter - I agree completely there have been better shooters. I said best shooter with no conscience. I guess I probably should give Chaz some credit because he was that. And if you're going to list shooters you shouldn't leave out Anthony Anderson or, for that matter, DK but DK was the antithesis of what I'm talking about.

Lorenzo Sutton!!!

•Three 30+ point games at UMass.
•Shares UMass record for 3-point shots made in a game with 8. Sutton did that on two occasions,
including 8/9 vs. Penn State (His Coach shut him down re: 3s after he made #8 at the beginning of the
the second half).
•UMass junior class record holder for 3-point percentage (.454) and free throw percentage (.833).
•Scoring average of 17.8 as a sophomore would have been higher, but the 3-point shot was not used that
season.
•Atlantic 10 Second Team honors as a sophomore, junior, and senior.
•High-scoring guard played in every game in sophomore, junior, and senior years.
•Team captain as a sophomore, junior, and senior.
•1731 career points was UM record at the time.
•Second in the A-10 in scoring in 1985-86, fourth in 1987-88, sixth in 1986-87.
Most points in an away game: 39 (tied)

Just finished watching a few mix videos of Unique and while I watch these knowing it's just the good stuff I have to say this kid has jaw dropping athleticism......could possibly be the best raw athlete at UMass since the good Doctor himself. I agree (again hard to tell from a mixtape) that he may not be a pure point guard, but couple him with Pipkins and it may POSSIBLY be the most dynamic, exciting backcourt in the country come the 2017-18 season. The highlights I saw were from his sophomore year, wearing a Hoosac jersey, hoping he fills out a bit and works hard on his ball-handling and jump shot. I know this reeks of maroon colored glasses but you can't coach body control, open court speed, taking it to the rack without fear, finishing ability and 40+" vertical soaring ability. If his basketball skills, (which appear to be solid, his left handed stroke looks really sound and he can use either hand naturally) can catch up to his athleticism then he will be a Unique talent.

I understand the point about signing a shooter to go with McLean whose strength, at this point, is not shooting. But, Isn't Zach Lewis a shooter?

I love what I read about Unique's athleticism, and the mention of a comparison to Briante Weber, if true, is promising. Welcome aboard at UM, UM!

^ Even if Lewis is the kind of shooter we hope, not the 31% from 3pt that he was as a sophomore, he's not enough, you need more. That 2016 class is also likely going to be at least 4, possibly 5+ players. When the class is so large I'd think you want some balance within it. Otherwise you'll have some major imbalance down the line when that class is juniors and seniors and you're relying on them to carry the team and none of them are good shooters... case in point last year and even this upcoming year, where we're all kind of hoping/counting on big production from a freshman because he's supposed to be a good shooter. Better to be ahead of the game than trying to plug major weaknesses with grad transfers and freshmen.

I'll bet that Joleonlescott will get a laugh when he reads that statement. :o

As someone who has his own pair of Maroon glasses I hope ALL of this comes to fruition.

I hope MacLean puts in a lot of practice on his jump shot in the next year. At 6 ft 1 in he's gonna have a hard time getting to the rim in the a10, no matter how athletic he is, especially if defenders lay off him 'cause his jumpshot is not a weapon.
