Re: Game 14, 2014-2015: St. Bonaventure
This will be the first game where we are not overmatched in height with our 3 guard starting lineup. SBU statistically is a lot like us. All 5 starters average double figures and then they drop down to 3.6 for their 6th man and 2.5 for #7 with almost nothing after that. We have 4 starters in double figures, with Donte and Jabarie not far behind, but then drop down to around 2 per game for a few guys.
Their starters are:
Posley (6-1) 17.7 points, 37% from 3
Wright (6-7) 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds
Jaylen Adams (6-1) 11.8 points, 44% from 3 (They also have a Jalen Adams, but he hasn't played in the last few games)
Cumberbatch (6-5) 10.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 34% from 3
Ndoye (7-0, 250) 10.6 points, 11.4 rebounds, almost 3 blocks per game
Off the bench:
Gregg (6-7) 3.6
Alston (6-2) 2.5
Dees (6-8) 1.2
Taqqee (6-4) 0.7
As a team, they take about 18 3's a game, with Posley, Adams and Cumberbatch taking 16 out of the 18. It's hard to judge how good they are. They played Pittsburgh tough on the road (54-58L) but they have lost a couple of games to horrid teams. They are 7-4, they outrebound their opponents by about 5 a game (we are dead even in rebounding), but they have played a pretty weak schedule.
Cady will have his hands full with Ndoye but we should have the advantage at almost every other position. Posley, even at 17.7 a game, only shoots .414 from the floor. Our depth is better than theirs and it doesn't seem that they run as much as we do so maybe we can wear them down. Important for us to get off to a good start in conference play and get a little momentum going.

Re: Game 14, 2014-2015: St. Bonaventure
^ I was just about to post something along these lines. It's hard to get a good gauge on SBU because they played a pretty terrible OOC schedule. They seem to be very average in many ways. They're not a good shooting team (FG% and True Shooting% are right around 200th in the nation), but they rebound, block shots and steal the ball at a pretty high level. They play at a slower pace than UMass and I would expect them to try and make this a grind it out type of game.
Lalanne's defense shouldn't really be tested by Ndoye because he's so limited offensively. Lalanne and Esho will however have their hands full on the defensive glass, Wright and Ndoye are both in the top 15 of all A10 players for offensive rebounding %.
Posley is definitely SBU's biggest offensive threat and the team's makeup kind of reminds me of URI two years ago when they had Munford who was forced to take a lot of shots and thus ended up shooting a rather poor %. Ideally you'd put Gordon on him defensively, but that means either Davis or Hinds would have to cover Cumberbatch and give up a lot of size and strength as he's really more of a well-rounded SF than a guard. Here's another case where it would make a lot of sense to insert Clark in the starting lineup to matchup with SBU's starting lineup.

The game is now listed for SNY on my Comcast cable (channel 395 for me), but still nothing on NESN+.

Re: Game 14, 2014-2015: St. Bonaventure
I agree that Clark would be a good option, but I don't see DK changing the lineup. I might start Jabarie on Posley. He's quick enough to stay in front of him and bother his shot. That would leave DG on Cumberbatch, kind of matching his size/strength.NilesGold wrote: Posley is definitely SBU's biggest offensive threat and the team's makeup kind of reminds me of URI two years ago when they had Munford who was forced to take a lot of shots and thus ended up shooting a rather poor %. An interesting matchup in the game is Maxie vs. Wright. This is a game where we need Maxie to step up and outplay Wright by a good margin - outrebound him and outscore him.
Re: Game 14, 2014-2015: St. Bonaventure
^ Oh I agree that DK won't change the starting lineup. Seems like kind of a waste to put Gordon on Cumberbatch, but you're right that Hinds on Posley and Davis on Adams probably makes the most sense if UMass goes with the same lineup it has been.
Wright is more important to SBU than Esho is to UMass, SBU's offense is mostly limited to their 5 starters. I think UMass will be fine if Esho can at least keep it close w/ Wright and prevent him from running wild on the offensive glass.

I haven't really observed that Maxie boxes out on the defensive boards. Has anyone noticed?

^ I'd say that's not a strong suit of anyone on the UMass roster.
