Re: Gaem #22: St Bonnaventure (Away)
My mindset going into this game is the same as it was for the Dayton game. Not expecting a win, hoping not to get blown out. Playing in Olean is tough and Schmidt is a hell of a coach, so I'm just hoping for a competitive game.

Bonnies and Umass are a lot alike in that they suck on the road. 4 of 5 conference losses were away.
They pounded Joes at home recently and gave Dayton a game at Dayton Saturday...
They need to be respectable here. The numbers are against them in this one. Looks like Bonnies will be a 4.5 or 5 point favorite.

The last time we won there was 2015 and it's a tough place to play as we all know. This might be a tough game for Josh. They have 2 physical, large centers in Venning (6'10, 255) and Brown (6'11, 265). Venning is their leading scorer in A10 play at 15 per game. He gets 28 minutes and Brown gets 10.
Some of you may remember that Venning played for Woodstock and I think he was the backup center to Mitchell for a year. Their second leading scorer (12 points in A10 play) is Adams-Woods, a 6'3 guard who we recruited heavily the year we got Sean East.
Adams-Woods went to Cinci and started 104 games over 4 years.
Venning wasn't highly recruited out of Woodstock and spent 2 years at Morgan State. He's upped his game considerably under Schmidt.

Will need scoring from the bench and some lucky breaks to go our way to pull out a W. Or just shoot the crap out of the 3 ball, which seems unlikely. Hoping for a close game and to make some winning plays in crunch time.
Random note- If UMass gets hot from 3, they can beat anyone in the league.

I think UMass can win this game on the road if it can shoot better than the 31% from 3 point range. In 7 of 9 games in the A10 we have played we have shot 31% or less from the 3 point line and overall we are ranked #276 of 362 teams with a 31.5% (Dayton is #7 at 39.4%). St. Bonnie is ranked #71 at 36.1% overall and 37.5% at home from 3 point range so let’s at least shoot 37.5% to give ourselves a chance on the road!

Re: Gaem #22: St Bonnaventure (Away)
I remember opening league play last year at St. Bonnies - New Years Eve I believe - we went in playing well - 9-3 and Bonnies were under .500 - we laid an absolute egg! Down 15 at half and ended up losing by 19 but I think we were down by 30 at one point in 2nd half. St. Bonnies is a tough place to play but I just don't see them laying an egg again. I kinda like that tonight is on the road - sorta takes some pressure off us. Seems like when we play a big game at home we come out a little flat so maybe we play loose and finally get a big win on the rd. Game is huge - we win and we have a path to the double bye - lose and it almost certainly means we play Wednesday.
Someone mentioned Venning out of Woodstock - I remember when all those kids were coming in from Woodstock - Tre, TJ, Noah had just transferred, Dominguez, etc...Venning made it very clear he wanted to come too - I recall seeing him at many of the games at Mullins and we never offered him. Watching the way he plays - he'd fit perfectly on this team. I think Cohen is going to struggle with him - but I also think if we're patient and get the ball to Josh in the paint he could get Venning in foul trouble.
I just have a really good feeling about this one - not going to predict a score or an amount we win by - just have a really good feeling we win tonight!!

Gazette preview. A little factual error, but still a good read. Garrett missed that Jabarie Hinds won one for us in 2015.

Regardless, Schmidt OWNS us. Bona is on an 11-game win streak over us since that Hinds game.
