I have to say, agree or disagree (I do a little of both)....the point about the players is very valid.

Agreed about the players.....but why did it not bother him to write articles blasting Bruiser in his final days???

I agree with his column very much. I like the message.

But you do have to wonder why he spent Bru's year trashing him, the program, and anything else. Lappas must have naked pictures of him. At this point Ronnie C just looks hypocritical.

If UMass loses to LaSalle I'll bet you'll see Chimelis bashing Lappas. Just a guess based on his expressed neutrality "for now"

From Dopey's article........
....He's one terrible refereeing call in Dayton from a 17-10 record this year, but his four-year, 50-64 record is indisputably disappointing. My impression is that if alumni opinion plays any major role in this decision, Lappas is in big trouble.

Well what about the three pointer that got called back about 20 seconds after it was credited to Lasalle? If the refs had not done that, no over time and no win so I guess we are right back at 16 - 11 and with another bad loss instead (BTW which included a double digit lead that evaporated just like all of the other ones).

Look at the whole body of work Ron not just one moment.

Are you concerned about the players? Really? You weren't concerned about dragging (or trying to drag) Mike Williams through the mud

I loved watching Mike Williams play, and his last-second heroics. But Mike Williams dragged himself through the mud more than any other person could.

In fact I always look at his dismissal costing us a great shot at a national championship.

A couple of things...I don't believe that Ronnie was at the Dayton game. So his comments on the call at the end of the game are based on what others have said or written, as opposed to his having seen it himself.

As for the comment:
In 2001, UMass made the A-10 final, needing a win over Temple to make the NCAA tournament, which would have saved Bruiser Flint's job.

UMass alumni everywhere prayed quietly for John Chaney. UMass lost, Flint was out, and Lappas was hired. Four years later, here we go again.

There were also many "UMass alumni everywhere" praying for Kayo to lobby the NIT for a bid that year, given how UMass charged back from a horrid 2-9 start to finish the season in the A-10 title game.

Will those same fans be doing the same clammoring if we make the A10 final this year?

Honestly I am curious what the reaction of some would be.

I can't believe it, at least none of us would do that.

Maybe he's grown as a man and as a journalist and understands better how irresponsible his articles were in the past. Is it really disappointing he's not as big of a jerk now?

A 19-12 UMass team goes to the NIT without lobbying.

Want to put a friendly wager on that? I am not saying you are wrong, but I certainly don't think that is a lock if you look at the numbers.

Well, they'd probably be adding a decent win or two the slate and then another game with St. Joe's or GW would also help the SOS (as they'd be adding another 3 wins to their season total as well).

I also think that we won't be able to test that theory, but if they do get to the final and don't get into the NIT, then I owe you something.

You are correct, I guees I was more put off by Ron's attitude about the whole thing. He "deserved to know" and he gave Cal a pretty hard time about it. I think that whole thing made matters worse when Cal "lied" to him about the Nets job, because he "deserved" to find that one out first too.

He isn't trying to deny the fact that Lappas has been a bad fit here, he is just trying to bring attention to the fact that the players give everything they have and deserve our respect and to be rooted for.

No matter how bad people do not like the coach, root for UMass because of the players they have and truly because we all want to see them win.

For one second forget about how much you all hate the coach and just try to look at it from the players' point of view. If you played, would you want to have fans actually hoping you lose to bring in another coach? I think it may drag my spirits down just a little bit.
