2022-23 Season

The 2022-23 UMass Minutemen men's basketball team represented the University of Massachusetts, the flagship campus in Amherst. The Head Coach was Frank Martin. The team played its home games in the Mullins Center in Amherst, Massachusetts, and was a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The season represented the 114th season of basketball in the school's history.

All M'men get into the game, except Cross who sits out with a minor injury. Dominguez 7-10, 15 pts, 7 boards. Luis 14-3-4, Kante 13-6-2, Noah 11-8-4, Keon 10-5-3. Leveque 5 & 3 in 14 minutes.
11/10 Towson L 67-55 Cross & Kante (13 each) Leveque & Martin (7 each) 1-1 UM up 22-20 with 9:20 left in the first, then Towson goes on a 12-0 run, and a sign of how things go the rest of the night. UM cold with .345 FG overall, .214 from 3, .545 from the line. Kante shoots 5-6. Cross debuts with 5-9 shooting, but cooled off after one hot stretch. Rest of team shoots 10-44. Towson shoots .586 in the first, .532 for the game, and +9 on the glass.
11/17 vs Colorado W 66-63 Fernandes (22) Cross (8) 2-1 Myrtle Beach Invitational, First Round, at HTC Center, Conway SC. UM scraps out the W, as Buffs win the glass by 5 and snare 19 offensive, but shoot 34% overall, 24% from 3. UM shoots just 11 threes, lowest since the 2014-15 season. Luis 18 pts (8-11 FG), Kante 10 pts (5-8 FG), rest of UM 4-22 FG.
11/18 vs Murray State W 71-69 Cross (15) Cross (14) 3-1 MBI Semi-Final. Trailing 69-68, Noah propels UM into the championship game with a game-winning 3. Down 10 with 7:30, and 7 with 4:45 to play, UM battles back. Cross notches his 1st UM double-double. Noah finishes with 14 pts, 5 assists. TJ adds 13 pts. Rest of team struggles with .256 shooting.
11/20 vs Charlotte W 60-54 Cross (12) Weeks (9) 4-1 MBI Championship Game. 49ers score the game's first basket, but UM responds with a 12-0 run and doesn't trail again. UM wins the glass by 10 and holds 49ers to 37% shooting. Weeks 11 pts, Noah 9 pts. RJ 9 & 6, Leveque 8 & 7. Noah & Cross named to All-Tournament Team, Noah named MVP.1)2)
11/29 at South Florida W 73-67 Dominguez (15) Leveque (10) 5-1 Tied at 20 in the first, UM builds a 40-25 cushion at the half. Still up 14 with 4:11 to go, UM loses focus and draws Frank's ire in the post-game comments. Dyondre a spark off the bench with 15-5-3. Leveque a double-double with 11 & 10, and hits a pair of 3s. Weeks 13 points, Cross 12. Noah just 3 points, but 9 assists. Keon sits out with injury.3)
12/2 at Harvard W 71-68 Fernandes (18) Leveque (7) 6-1 Out of synch early, UM falls behind by 11, but hangs tough, regroups, and pulls out the win. Noah scores 15 in the second half. Gapare makes big progress with a pair of 3s, and stopping Crimson star Ledlum (25 & 10) in the final seconds.
12/5 Albany W 87-73 Gapare (15) Weeks (8) 7-1 UM takes a 53-26 lead early in the second, but gives up 52 in the second half and Frank slams the lack of leadership.4) Gapare wows with some highlight reel dunks, 5 steals, 2 blocks. Noah out with sprained ankle. Albany brings nostalgia with Dwayne Killings5) and Lari Ketner's son Tairi.
12/8 UMass-Lowell L 85-80 Cross (19) Weeks (9) 7-2 M'men fall behind by 15, early in the second, and claw back to make it a 1-point game late, but Lowell preserves. UML shoots .692 in the second half, .564 for the night, UM defense's worst of the season. Cross wakes up to score 17 in the second half. Noah still out. Luis 14 pts, Keon 11, Dyondre 10. UML improves to 10-1.
12/11 vs Hofstra W 71-56 Gapare (13) Cross & Dominguez (9 each) 8-2 Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational, at Barclays Center, Brooklyn NY. UM goes on a 22-2 run in the second half to secure the win. Cross (12 pts) named game MVP.6) Dominguez 12 pts. Keon 8-4-4. Noah still out.
12/17 vs North Texas L 62-44 Cross (19) Cross (13) 8-3 Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, at MassMutual Center, Springfield MA. UM falls apart, giving up a 20-5 run in the second half, shoots 19% and -6 on the glass in the frame. Dominguez 12 & 9. After Cross & DD, rest of team scores just 13 points combined, hampered by Noah still recovering. Foul fest: 49 total, 28 in the second half.
12/20 Dartmouth W 68-57 Weeks (19) Cross (9) 9-3 Down their top-4 starters to illness, DC still manages to hold a 10-point lead with 13:35 to play. UM finally wakes up and out-scores DC 33-12 the rest of the way. Weeks 19-5-5, Cross 16-9-4, Dominguez 14 & 5. Frank goes without a true PG for a time as Noah remains out.
12/31 at St. Bonaventure L 83-64 Fernandes (13) Kante (10) 9-4 0-1 Bona's offense, averaging just 62.3 ppg in their previous eight, finds their form, and UM looks rusty after the 11-day holiday layoff. Banks 31, Farell 22 (career high) for Bona. Noah 13-2-3 in first action in 4 weeks. Kante 12 & 10, first UM double-double. Martin 12 & 8 (both UM highs), Luis 11 & 3. Cross and Weeks held to 1-10 shooting combined. Leveque and Diggins unavailable.
1/4 Saint Louis W 90-81 Fernandes (26) Cross (7) 10-4 1-1 UM does it with offense, shooting .476 from three (highest since 11/20), and scoring most since the opener. Noah hits a season-high. Scoring spreads around, 8 other Minutemen score between 6-11 points. Gapare 8 pts 6 rebs 5 blocks 2 assists 2 steals.
1/7 at George Washington L 81-73 Fernandes / Luis / Weeks (13 each) Luis (8) 10-5 1-2 UM lapses in the first half, when a 19-17 deficit blows up to 40-21. UM claws back a little at times, but never truly threatens again. Wildens remains out. Luis encouraging with 13-8-5 in 27 min. Kante 12 & 7. Dominguez 11-2-4. FTs: UM 6-9, GW 20-25.
1/11 La Salle L 78-77 Fernandes (15) Cross (9) 10-6 1-3 La Salle gets hot in the second half, with runs of 16-6 and 35-20, and builds a 10-point lead. UM regroups and cuts it to one, but squanders the potential game winning sequence, and drops a game where they were favored by 9. Luis 14-4-2 in 19 minutes. Leveque returns with 10 & 5 in 20 minutes off the bench.
1/14 Rhode Island W 75-65 Cross (22) Cross / Dominguez / Keon Thompson (7 each) 11-6 2-3 UM uses a 12-0 run early in the second half as the deciding stretch. UM +12 on the glass. Rhody cold from 3 (4-19 / .211). Cross and Diggins (7 pts) set new career highs. Dominguez 12 pts, Keon 9-7-5, BMart 8 & 5. Noah (ankle) and RJ (wrist) sit out.
1/17 at VCU L 83-55 Cross (15) Cross (10) 11-7 2-4 UM down just 5 early in the second, but falls apart, allowing a 27-8 run to decide it. FG%: UM .292, VCU .525. 3pt FG%: UM .160, VCU .500. Dyondre 10 pts. Leveque fouls out in just 14 minutes. Noah and RJ remain out.
1/21 at Saint Joseph's L 74-68 Diggins & Luis (15 each) Cross (10) 11-8 2-5 UM goes ahead 52-51 at the 13:49 mark, but proceeded to give up an 11-0 run and couldn't claw back. Luis comes back strong with 7-9 FG in 22 minutes. Diggins sets a new career high. FTAs: UM 10, SJU 22. Noah still out.
1/25 Richmond W 85-76 Luis (23) Cross (8) 12-8 3-5 UM bounces back strong, holding UR scoreless over the last 3 minutes. Luis sets a new season/career high. Cross 16 pts. Diggins 12-2-6 and 0 turnovers. Kante 10 & 3, Leveque 9 & 6. UM perseveres without Noah and TJ.
1/28 Duquesne W 87-79 Luis (31) Dominguez (11) 13-8 4-5 Luis shoots 7-11 from the floor, 17-18 from the stripe, en route to a new season/career high. Dyondre a double-double with 13 & 11, UM +11 on the glass, as M'men survive without Noah and Matt.
2/1 at George Mason L 70-59 Weeks (18) Dominguez (11) 13-9 4-6 No Noah and Matt again, then RJ takes a hit to the face and misses the second half. The remainder of UM's offense struggles (.369 FG%, .231 from 3).
2/4 Davidson L 93-78 Cross (28) Leveque (6) 13-10 4-7 UM lets the Cats run wild in the second half, as DC scores 55, shooting 64% overall and 58% from 3. Cross a warrior with a career-high 28, just a few days removed from being in the hospital with a stomach illness.7) Keon a season/career-high 12 assists as UM plays without Noah, Diggins, and Luis.
2/8 at Fordham L 77-67 Cross (17) Cross / Kante / Leveque (5 each) 13-11 4-8 UM shoots 54% in the first and builds a 7-point lead, but stalls to start the second, as Fordham goes on an extended 28-6 run. Keon plays nearly 37 minutes as UM goes without Noah, RJ, Diggins again.
2/11 at La Salle L 86-72 Weeks (16) Cross (8) 13-12 4-9 UM allows 53 points and .679 FG shooting to the Explorers in the second half. Luis returns, 10 & 3 off the bench in 14+ minutes. Cross 15 pts. Noah and Diggins remain out.
2/14 Loyola Chicago L 64-62 Weeks (18) Luis (6) 13-13 4-10 Ramblers build a 61-43 lead with 9:51 to play. UM counters with Leveque & Kante together, Ramblers don't hit a FG the rest of the way. UM misses the chance to tie on the final possession. Cross injures leg 5 minutes in. Diggins returns, Noah still out.
2/18 at Rhode Island W 69-45 Keon Thompson (15) Kante (8) 14-13 5-10 Rhody starts with a 13-7 lead, then goes cold, shooting .246 FG, .160 3FG (4-25). UM shoots .500 and +9 on glass, all without Noah, Cross, Dominguez, Brandon. Luis 14 & 7, Gapare 11 & 7.
2/22 Dayton L 72-54 Luis (21) Luis (9) 14-14 5-11 Too tall a task without Noah & Matt. Dayton starts with a 9-0 lead and never trails. Great game from RJ, but only Keon (10) joins him in double-figure scoring. Leveque 9 & 7. Noah & Matt out.
3/1 at Duquesne L 88-79 Luis (23) Dominguez (9) 14-15 5-12 UM falls behind by 17 in the first, claws back to within 2 in the second, but can't pull ahead. Dyondre 17 & 9 in 25 minutes off the bench. Kante 15 & 5, Keon 11-1-4, TJ 10 & 4. Noah & Matt out.
3/4 St. Bonaventure W 71-60 Diggins & Luis (14 each) Luis (9) 15-15 6-12 Cross returns (5 & 4 in 20 minutes) and Senior Day ends with a W. Another near-double-double for RJ, Diggins nearly matches his career high. Leveque 11 & 5, TJ 9 & 5, Kante 8 & 5.
3/7 vs Richmond L 71-38 Luis (12) Cross and Luis (8 each) 15-16 A-10 Tournament First Round, at Barclays Center. Seeds: UR 12, UM 13. UM connects on 2 of first 3 shots, then only go 13-60 (.217) the rest of the way. 3PT FGs: 1-16 (.063). 17 turnovers in the first 24:31. Wildens 3 FGs, Weeks 2, no one else more than 1. Season low in FG% (.238), assists (6), and second lowest FGs (15). UM's worst-ever defeat in a conference tournament game, by margin and lowest points.

Pre-season: UMass also played an unofficial scrimmage, at Holy Cross.8) No details of the results became available.

Other scheduling notes:

  • We had room to add one more non-conference game, but didn't end up doing so.49)
  • South Florida begins a home-and home series.50) UM is expected to host USF in a future season.
  • Towson begins a home-and-home series. UM will play there next season.51)
  • The game at Harvard is presumed to be the start of a series, but no report confirming that has yet surfaced.
  • UMass-Lowell has appeared on our schedule every season back to 2016-17, except for the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, but no indication if this season's game is part of a longer series.
  • The games versus Albany, Central Connecticut, Dartmouth are expected to be one-offs. There have been no reports of extended series.
  • With 15 members for the first time in Atlantic 10 history, the league will keep an 18-game schedule, but will tweak the format. In recent years, a school would have home-and-homes against five other conference members. This season, the home-and-homes are reduced to four.52)
  • Penn State: UM was supposed to visit to complete a contracted home-and-home series this season,53)54) but their 2022-23 schedule does not mention us.55) Unsure if the game will be deferred to a future season, or bought out entirely.
  • The A-10 and Mountain West conferences spoke about possibly playing games this season, but plans in previous seasons never came together. TBD on how they might this season.56)57)
