MHERST - The last time the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team faced Holy Cross, the game changed the Minutemen's season.
It was Dec. 4, 2001, and confidence was high in Amherst as the Minutemen were a surprising 4-0 with upset wins over Oregon and North Carolina State on their resume under new coach Steve Lappas. But the Crusaders delivered a 67-56 upset that started a stretch that saw the Minutemen lose eight of their next 10 in a 13-16 season.
UMass could use another season-changing Holy Cross game at 7 tonight at the Mullins Center. This year the Minutemen hope for a change for the better as they arrive at 1-6 after back-to-back tight losses.
"I think we're the best 1-6 team in the country with the best attitude of a 1-6 team in the country," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "We just have to keep getting better."
For the Minutemen, this three-year series with the Crusaders is dipping their oar back in dangerous waters. After the two New England foes did not meet for seven seasons, they resumed their rivalry on Nov. 25, 2000, the third game of Bruiser Flint's final season in Amherst.
Holy Cross, led by Rutgers transfer Josh Sankes at center, surprised UMass in the Centrum, 78-65, as part of the Minutemen's 1-6 start that ballooned to 2-9. The following year UMass hosted the Crusaders with revenge in mind, only to lose again.
The Crusaders lead the all-time series 36-17. The last Minuteman win was 97-80 on Dec. 11, 1993.
Holy Cross is 12-4 against Atlantic 10 teams under coach Ralph Willard, including a 73-69 win over Saint Joseph's earlier this season.
That's one of only three wins for the 3-6 Crusaders. After beating Sacred Heart and the Hawks, Holy Cross lost six straight games to Brown, Northeastern, Harvard, Loyola-Chicago, Fairfield and Yale, before rebounding with a 69-63 win Saturday over Western Michigan. The Crusaders have yet to win a road game.
Freshman R.J. Evans is the only double-digit scorer for Holy Cross, averaging 10.7 points per game. The Crusaders have struggled from the field, shooting just 38.8 percent and only 27.3 percent from 3-point range.
Their strength has been on the glass. With five players 6-foot-8 or taller, Holy Cross has outrebounded their opponents by more than five per game. They will likely be without senior Alex Vander Baan, who has missed the last two games with an injury. He shares the team lead with Eric Meister at 6.2 rebounds per game.
"They're very big inside," Kellogg said. "We have to get the game moving a little bit and pick the pressure up on them.
"Now that we've done a better job building our half-court defense we can move it out a little bit and try to deny on the wings a little bit and play a faster pace," he added.
BONNER CAMEO SATURDAY? - Kellogg hopes that senior center Luke Bonner would travel with the Minutemen to Kansas for a game at 2 p.m. Saturday and that he could play for a few minutes. The goal is to have him back for regular minutes in the Dec. 20 game at home against Hofstra after UMass has most of next week off for finals.
"I'm envisioning him playing a minute or two to get out and have a little game feeling before really coming back at full strength next weekend," Kellogg said.
Kellogg said he's trying to be careful with Tony Gaffney in practice of late. The senior forward is the only experienced healthy big man the Minutemen have available and Kellogg wants to keep him that way.
"I'm taking him out of some drills if I see him limping or moving gingerly out there," Kellogg said. "I need him in games. I need him playing at the level he's been playing all season."

MHERST, Mass. - Needing a victory, UMass' senior leaders got just that on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center, as Tony Gaffney and Chris Lowe led the Minutemen to a 73-59 victory over Holy Cross. Gaffney, for the second-straight game, had a near triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and eight blocks. Lowe dished out 12 assists to go with nine points as UMass used a suffocating defense in the second half to erase a halftime deficit. Ricky Harris led all scorers with 23 points. UMass improves to 2-6 on the season, while Holy Cross falls to 3-7.
Anthony Gurley tallied 14 points and six rebounds to give UMass three players in double figures. Holy Cross was led by RJ Evans' 17 points and eight boards.
The Minutemen finished shooting 25-for-50 (50%) from the field while Holy Cross was 20-for-56 (36%).
After Holy Cross made a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game, the Minutemen scored the next eight points, including to layups by Lowe, on their way to 13-5 lead at the first time out just over four minutes into the game.
The Crusaders went on 9-0 run over a 2:34 stretch to take their first lead, 16-15, with 12:30 left in the first half.
The teams traded the lead five times in the middle of the half, but another 9-0 Crusaders run over a span of 5:39 gave them a 29-21 lead with 4:44 on the clock.
The Minutemen closed the half with a 6-1 spurt, capped off by Lowe finding Tyrell Lynch for a layup with one second left, to pull within three, 32-29, at halftime.
Holy Cross' Evans led all scorers with 10 points in the first half, while UMass was led by Gurley's seven. UMass outshot the Crusaders, 45.5% to 33.3% in the half, but trailed in rebounding, 21-16.
The Crusaders started the second half with two-straight hoops to take their biggest lead, 36-29, but the Minutemen came roaring back. The home team used a 7-0 run to tie the game, 36-36, and after Holy Cross retook the lead by four, a 12-0 run over a 2:12 span that gave UMass a 53-45 lead with 10:30 left. The run, finished off by a Matt Glass 3-pointer, was fueled by increased defensive intensity as the Minutemen switched to a full-court press and held the Crusaders without a field goal for 6:02.
UMass kept the pedal down for the rest of the game. Another Glass 3-pointer followed by a Lowe-to-Gaffney dunk led to a Holy Cross timeout and gave UMass a 67-51 lead with 5:25 remaining. At 3:32 the same duo brought the crowd to their feet when Lowe lobbed to Gaffney for the jam to make it 72-54 with 3:32 left.
The Minutemen return to action on Saturday when they travel to take on national champion Kansas in Kansas City, Mo. at 2 p.m.
Coach Kellogg's general thoughts
Our guys played a complete game tonight. For 40 minutes they put pressure on Holy Cross. In the first half we didn't make a lot of shots and that was the first tie I had seen them run the 1-3-1 this season. We adjusted on the fly, Chris Lowe made some great plays in the second half. We forced tempo. Ricky Harris got going a little bit and made some shots and Tony Gaffney had 17 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks, four steals. That is not a bad evening. What we received tonight was some lift from other guys. Our core guys of Anthony Gurley, Tony Gaffney, Chris Lowe, and Ricky Harris will give us great efforts most nights, but tonight Matt Glass stepped up in the second half. He had six points he was all over the court on the defensive end of the floor, he got some good rebounds and went in there and scrapped. I thought Tyrell Lynch had not a great amount of energy in the first half, but came out in the second half and gave us some great minutes off the bench. David Gibbs knows when he misses a ball. He is starting to realize and know what is expected of him. I think the team as whole is starting to realize exactly what is expected of them and how hard you have to play for 40 minutes. It is not easy to compete for 40 minutes, but that is how you want to do it.
Coach Kellogg on getting a win
I thought it was great for these kids. They have been working hard and carried a great attitude every single day. To be 1-6 sometimes, kids can go the other way but these kids have not. They looked me in the eye and they want to win, they just need to be shown how. I think us getting a win now validates some of the things we are trying to teach them. Playing Boston College to the wire, and I think the Toledo game was a turning point, where even though we didn't get the win, we realized how hard you have to play and how hard you have to compete for 40 minutes. I'm not sure if we knew how to win then. At the Boston College game, we were ready to win, but we just didn't get there. Tonight, what I was proud of was that when Holy Cross got a lead in the second half, we didn't go away. We stayed with it and pulled away with a W.
Chris Lowe on his play tonight
I've been slumping lately and I just got back to the basics, playing defense and getting my team involved. I was worried about too many things and I was too distracted the first couple of games. I just got back to myself and started being Chris Lowe, what made me a great point guard to begin with. I started playing defense and getting my teammates the ball. The other team was sagging in the paint, so I drove into the paint and got my teammates the ball for open jump shots. We have great shooters in Matt Glass, Ricky Harris, and Anthony Gurley, they knock down the shots.
Chris Lowe on defense
Coach has been preaching defense since he left Memphis and knew he was coming here. The first day he met us, the first day he started coaching, he knew we had great scorers, and that we could score the basketball, that wasn't the problem. The problem was that we needed to learn to defend for 35 seconds. We were only defending for 15 or 20 seconds.
Matt Glass on Chris Lowe's play
We are a whole different team (when he plays well). When he is in his comfort zone, when he is making plays, when the floor is spread we put the ball in his hands and let him go. He is one of the top point guards in the country. He gets people involved and takes over the game and he showed that tonight.
Matt Glass on his new role
Obviously, we're missing a lot of big players. Tony is playing incredible, but we need a few other guys to step up. I need to keep eating my Wheaties and get in the weight room so that I can be able to bang down there until we get Luke Bonner back. I just need to step up and fill my role and be able to be physical down there. At the same time, I need to be able to knock down shots.
Tony Gaffney on the win
I guess you could say we got the monkey off our back. The biggest part of this run so far has been that the guys and the coaching staff have stuck together. We believe we are a good team. We know we are a good basketball team. When we get Luke back, we will be that much better. Everyone has bought into what the coaching staff is teaching us. Guys have stuck together through this tough time. Hopefully tonight is just another stepping stone in the right direction.
Tony Gaffney on Chris Lowe
He has been phenomenal. Obviously, there have been people who have doubted this team, especially him. You guys don't see it, but everyday in practice he has been the best leader we have. He comes into practice smiling everyday, trying to get guys going. He knows this is a long season. He has been a changed man and I can't say enough about him. His enthusiasm through this whole time has been great.
Tony Gaffney had his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds after having none in his first 81 college games in his first three seasons.
It was Gaffney's fifth game in double-figures this season and ninth of his career.
Gaffney had eight blocks giving him 17 in the last two games.
Ricky Harris had his fifth game of the year with 20 or more points and 25th game of his career as he scored 23.
Harris reached double-figures for the seventh time in eight games this season with 23. It was his 45th career game with double-figures.
Harris moved to sixth in career 3-pointers in UMass history passing James Life (148) as he hit three in the game to give him 150. Next on the list is Lorenzo Sutton (178).
Anthony Gurley scored in double-figures for the sixth time in eight games this season with 14 and 15th time in his career.
Chris Lowe had his third game of the year double-figure assists with 12. Lowe racked up 11 against BC to give him 23 in the last two games. It was Lowe's ninth career game with 10 or more assists.
Lowe was just short of his career-high of 14 assists set when he posted a triple-double last season.
Matt Glass drew his first start of the season and third of his career, at forward.
MHERST - Consecutive loss number seven by the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team looked imminent for a while Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen, who have struggled in the second half all season, trailed by seven shortly after intermission.

The Minutemen's pressing and trapping led to 10 second-half turnovers by Holy Cross as UMass pulled away for a 73-59 win before 4,102 fans, snapping its six-game losing streak.
"I guess you could say we got the monkey off our back," said senior Tony Gaffney. "The guys and the coaches have stuck together. We believe we're a good basketball team. Hopefully tonight is another stepping-stone in the right direction."
Kellogg looked relieved in the postgame press conference.
"It feels good to come in here with a smile," he said. "I thought our guys played a complete game tonight ... The W is great for these kids. They've worked hard and had a great attitude every single day. Us getting a win validates some of the things we're trying to teach them."
After a lackluster first half, the up-tempo defense seemed to ignited UMass (2-6) after intermission. The Minutemen scored 15 points off turnovers in the second half.
"The story of the game was our turnovers which UMass did a great job of turning into baskets," Holy Cross coach Ralph Willard said.
The Minutemen trailed 32-29 at halftime and gave up the first four points of the second half. A drive by Chris Lowe and a 3-pointer by Anthony Gurley tied the game, but the Crusaders scored four straight to regain the lead.
Holy Cross kept UMass at arm's length until Andrew Keister made a free throw to put the visitors ahead 45-41.
After Gaffney laid the ball in, he corralled the rebound of a missed shot by R.J. Evans to start a fast break that Ricky Harris finished with a 3-pointer from the wing that put the Minutemen up 46-45.
That sequence started a 12-0 UMass run that set the Crusaders back on their heels. Harris paced the surge with five points, an assist, a steal and a rebound during that stretch.
From there the Minutemen dominated, stretching their edge all the way to 73-54 before Holy Cross scored the last five points of the game.
Gaffney just missed a triple-double for the second straight game, finishing with 17 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocked shots and four steals.
Harris added 23 points, while Gurley added 14 points and six rebounds. Lowe had nine points, 12 assists and four turnovers.
Evans led Holy Cross (3-7) with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Kellogg said he hopes his team would continue building from the win.
"I told the guys before the game I thought we were the best 1-6 team in the country. After the game I told them I thought we were the best 2-6 team in the country," Kellogg said. "Hopefully at some point we'll be the best 3-6 team in the country."
If the Minutemen get to 3-6, they'll have a pretty good claim for that title. They face defending national champion Kansas at 2 p.m. Saturday in Kansas City.

MHERST - Earlier in the season, both coach Derek Kellogg and Chris Lowe said the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team would get a lot better when the senior point guard started playing better.
![]() Anthony Gurley breaks to the basket in front of RJ Evans Photo credit: Jerrey Roberts, Daily Hampshire Gazette |
If that wasn't Lowe's best game of the season, it was certainly his best half of the year after intermission. The senior point guard finished with nine points, 12 assists and four turnovers in the 73-59 win over Holy Cross. He had eight assists and one turnover in the second half.
Lowe smiled broadly as he walked into the postgame press conference.
"This was a long time coming," Lowe said. "I haven't felt like this since (last year's final game) against Ohio State ... I've been slumping lately.
"I just tried to get back to basics and get my teammates involved," he added. "I got back to being Chris Lowe. What made me a great point guard was getting my teammates involved."
His teammates were happy for him.
"There's been people doubting everyone and him in particular. But in practice he's been the best leader we have getting guys going," senior Tony Gaffney said. "I can't say enough about him. I couldn't be more happy for the kid."
Sophomore Matt Glass agreed.
"We're a whole different team when he's making plays," Glass said. "He's one of the top point guards in the country when he's getting people involved."
Kellogg had focused a lot of time on his point guard since the last game.
"I'm very happy. From the Boston College game to tonight I've spent a lot of time with Chris Lowe," Kellogg said. "Last year he had a great season, but he had other guys who could take on a leadership position. He's as vocal now as he's been since I've been here."
It was Lowe's ninth career game with double figures in assists.

"I'm just so happy to get this win. That doesn't matter," Gaffney said of missing the triple-double.
GLASS STARTS - Kellogg moved Glass into the starting lineup in place of freshman Tyrell Lynch. After getting two fouls in four minutes in the first half, Glass had six points and three rebounds in the second half.
It was the third career start for Glass, but his first at power forward, a position he's undersized for at 6-foot-6.
"I've got to keep eating my Wheaties and get in the weight room so I can keep banging down there until Lukey (Bonner) comes back," Glass said.
MISCELLANEOUS - Junior Lex Mongo appeared in his first career game, playing one minute in the second half.
Former staff assistant Brian Gorman, who is now the head coach at Becker College, was in attendance.
