Collegian has an article about the freshmen today, with the first focus on Putney.

One thing that caught my eye: though he's listed at 6'8" 180 on the roster, he's probably closer to 160. Yikes! Get thee to the Berkshire DC, pronto!

Tough to KAEO Putney because when he turns sideways he disappears

One more game with Putney not taking off the warm-ups. Redshirt year looks more and more likely.

Will he even be ready next year? I was expecting skinny but then saw him and still said a couple holy shits. his arms are the width of fingers.

I'd say let's pool together some donations for some DP Dough gift cards, but that'd be a NCAA violation 8)

Isn't this thread about the recruitment of Putney, not about him as a UMASS player? :?: :?: :?:

According to the insider show Putney says he's 167 and wants to get up to 175.

That seems like an achievable goal. I'd be glad to give him about 15 pounds of mine.

Even if he were to get up to 200 pounds, he'd still be the skinniest big man we've had since Ted Cotrell in '92-93. And to get there, he'd need to increase his current weight by 20%. I'm not even sure that is possible while remaining healthy. Getting to 175 pounds sounds like a good short term goal for this season but not something that is going to get him into the rotation this year or next - it's still extremely thin. If he could get to 185 or 190 a year from now, he might start seeing some action at small forward. Even then, I think he'll be prone to injury and joint ailments.

From the History Scoreboards page, here are the freshmen weights for other "skinny" freshmen we've had that were 6'-7", 6'-8", or 6'-9":

Tony Gaffney (6'-8") 190
Papa Lo (6'-9") 215
Travon Wilcher (6'-7") 210
Stephane Lasme (6'-8") 190
Gabe Lee (6'-9") 202
Ronnell Blizzard (6'-8") 196
Ted Cotrell (6'-9") 190
Rigo Nunez (6'-7") 182

Putney is Skinny Man indeed!

So he's 50 pounds less than Papa Lo was, and the same height. That's scary.

I gained 39 pounds in 6 weeks. When I went for physical to join the service I was 5'11" and 103 pounds just out of HS. The doc asked me if I really wanted in. I said, "for sure" so he listed me at the minimum for 5'9" @ 125 pounds. After 6 weeks of running and eating I came out of basic training at 142 and was still the third fastest guy in my outfit. That was many years ago. Now hit the scales at 195. I see no reason why Putney can't add weight and strength without losing any of his quickness unless there is some physical problem. Feed him and work him, or enlist him in the reserves.
