I think we break out of the funk tomorrow night and smack them by about 15 or so. Not enough to get Martelli fired on the spot, but we send St. Joes down a path that he won't recover from.

This. I think we play better, score more, make a few great plays and beat them but not the spread. Better, but not like the early season.

And we opened at -10. This is the 3rd game in a row where the final line will end up lower than the opening line with us as favorites. There are people out there looking for a loss to knock us out of the top 25.

That early line movement is misleading. If you look at the books, most opened the game between 9/8 once public.

Good news for those of you who can't get to the Bill tonight....the game is on Comcast Sports New England.

That said come to the game if you can...love to see a big enthusiastic home crowd tonight. 8)

As the bullseye gets bigger, and the recent lackluster play, comments like this make me worry:

"I think we proved a lot of people wrong with how few games we lost going into conference play," senior forward Raphiael Putney said. "We were the team nobody cared about. Now we're one of the biggest teams in the country everybody has to watch out for."

But that was followed by this quote from Sampson:

"It kind of wakes us up a little bit," he said. "I'm going to try to keep all my teammates intact and focused, because now that we're going into conference play, we're going to go play some big road games and teams will try to come at us really hard. We have to try to stay focused and not get complacent."

Hopefully the team takes Sampson's approach of making sure you're up for everybody's best effort, as opposed to thinking that "everybody has to watch out" for them.

Am I out of line thinking that tonight should be relatively easy? St. Joe's was better the past 2 years then they are this year and Umass had little trouble (save for the first half in Jan 2012) against them. Now we are #19 in the country and people are worried about this game? If it were @ St. Joe's I'd be a little more worried...not at home. They win tonight. 75-65.

As teams start focusing on shutting down Chaz or Cady, we need someone else to step up and play big. Maxie has done that lately, and Trey has played well. That's how we looked so good early on, there was a different guy or two who had great games and others real solid games as well. Makes us too hard to defend. Conference games always bring the intensity, so we need to be ready to go like Samp says. Throw all the ranking shit out the window, take care of business in conference play and worry about the ranking when the dust settles. Nobody remembers what we were ranked in December if we shit the bed in conference play. This is the real season

I'm predicting a 12 point win for us tonight. Not 11, not 13 - but 12. 80-68.

I have a feeling this is going to be a big Cady game if he works hard on the block and gets entry passes in good spots. I would imagine that Martelli will have Roberts play Cady straight up (no double teaming him) and we know Cady hasn't quite figured out how to handle double teams yet so this may be a game we see him dominate like early on in the year.

Speaking of Cady's trouble with double teams, I actually think that he isn't as bad as it appears. He has gotten himself into some poor spots to get doubled, but we have been BAD at cutting off the traps. I decided to waste some time by looking through the full-game Miami upload on YouTube from Scottie and picked out two plays:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1qMkHA0l-k

6:50- Cady's first touch. Look at where out guys are. Putney is the only truly open guy that is an offensive threat where he is currently positioned but there is no way Cady can make that pass. Samp got chucked as a cutter, so he had nowhere to pass.

8:15- Cady makes the right pass to a cutting Sampson. No finish.

The first touch is an example of what we have been seeing. Hope DK is working on spacing and cutting off Cady double teams since he is probably going to continue to see them in A10 play.

The game opened at 10 points

But it now at 8 in most places.

The CBS sports computer picks a 83-70 Umass win

But the only opinion that matters is mine so I say Umass wins 79-64
