Game 23, 2017-18: Rhode Island (1/30)

Post by MikeUMA » Mon Jan 29, 2018 9:41 am

Time to move on, because we have a Tuesday game this week. Re-match vs Rhody.

Early start time too: 6:30 for the CBS Sports Network cameras.

Rhody was 24/23 in last week's polls. They had another 2-0 week, albeit a scary one, almost dropping Saturday's home game to Duquesne.

I'm having a hard time imagining that this game is going to go particularly well. I hope I'm wrong and will be rooting strongly for UMass as always.

When we played them a week and a half ago, every time we tried to set a screen up top, they would double the ball handler. Our guys were woefully unprepared for that from both the ball handler and screener perspectives. If they can solve that problem, as well as pull a few takeaways from the URI-Duquesne game film, we might have a chance. Might.

According to UMass coach Matt McCall Chris Baldwin will not play in Tuesdays game against Rhode Island
Per Matt, it's the knee. Line is 10.5 and if I were a betting man I would have a hard time not giving the 10.5.

I would never bet against UMass, but I seriously thought we would start at 19-22 point underdogs in this one

Without any size it will be an extreme uphill battle tonight and the rest of the season. My hope is our guard oriented ( because thats all we have) can get to the basket especially Unique. Drive and kick and hopefully we make shots. Watching Duke ( whole nother stratosphere) they have that uncanny ability to drive and draw defenders and then find the 3 ball. time and time again. Not saying we could ever match that. we just dont have those elite players but We have had some success doing that. Need Miller to find his shot again. Need him for some timely 3s in the games ahead. Go UMass!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe in football terms this game would be called a "body bag game".....

After the scare the Dukes put into Rhody this past weekend, I expect them to come out firing and get this game in hand quickly..

^ Agreed on your last point. If Rhody had taken care of business versus the Duqies, tonight could have been a trap game for them. Now, I think they'll be dialed in and realize they have to bring it every night, especially on the road.

Rhody should cover, easily.

In the Time Flies department, UMass hasn't beaten a ranked team at the Mullins in over ten years.

This ones gonna be ugly... URI usually has some trouble in the Mullins but I'm stunned this line is so short. It actually looks like as of typing this UMass is all the way up to +9.... YIKES who is the A10 sharp hammering UMass? Do they know UMass only has 6 scholarship guys available to play tonight? Did the URI bus crash on it's way to Amherst and I just haven't heard about it yet?
