I am sure he and I will be texting each other on Thurs night when the J-E-T-S and Dolphins make their annual, horrible first round picks.

I recall Harper making a clutch 3.
I also recall Twisters and I screaming "Harper Nooooo!" at the TV when he released the shot.

Top (in person) Umass moment for me for sure. I remember screaming OH NOOOOO!

Top (not in person) Umass moment is still and will probably always be Mike Williams making that shot at MSG to beat NC in the Preseason NIT. That was not an OH NOOO moment - that was a "He better be the one who has the ball" moment and it played out perfectly.

Also, if they kept Rasheen off the road this past weekend to host White I am believing A. They really want him and B. Their best closer will close

We’ll see

Would be a massive get. White is a great rebounder

I hope you're right, but we won't know this for 4 years. Might be good to pump the brakes on this take a bit...

^ We don't need 4 years to be able to draw a reasonable comparison between the 2016 and 2018 classes. We should have somewhat of an idea by this time next year, at worst 3 years from now it should be pretty clear.

Sorry, but I disagree with that. If the 2016 class has a great year next year and our 2018 class struggles as freshmen, would that be fair to the 2018 class to say the 2016 was better? I think not. Let them play out their careers... I used 4 years because it's a reasonable expectation that each will play 4 years of college. It could be less time.

I think it's fair to say that the group as a whole underperformed in 2016-2017 relative to the hype.
Jarreau - 9.8 points, 4.5 assists but 64% from the FT line and 24% from 3.
Gresham - 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds
Flowers - 4.5 points but only 31% from 3 which was supposed to be his strong suit.
Baldwin - 2.2 points, 2.8 renounds

Each player had some good moments and Jarreau had quite a few but overall I would classify this as very mediocre for such a highly touted group.

The question for next year is playing time. We'll have to see if there is any other roster activity but do we see any of the freshmen getting more than 15 minutes a game? That is probably a topic to be started when we know the roster.

For that matter, will the class of 2016 see much playing time?

The nice thing with having Chatman coming onboard is we now have multiple guys to throw at opponents who have both some size and some quickness.

I think last year we were hamstrung defensively and to a slightly lesser extent on the boards by the fact that our guards were really small and our bigs were really big (and on the slower side) -- there weren't very many options for the bigger wings and guards or quicker bigs. This year there should be options. I think how much the defensive/rebounding improves this year is going to tell a lot about just how good of a coach McCall is. At least for me it will.

The college game is changing right before our eyes. With the one and dones and all of the transferring that’s happening I don’t think four years is a good measure anymore.

In UMass’ case the coaching change has had an effect to be sure but the rosters 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 are each pretty different.

Feels like it’s year by year now.

Thanks for the stats 69.

Your comment at the end about minutes per game made me aware that you had not include minutes per game along with the points/rebounds. I don't know if you agree that MPG's are important for an assessment of underperforming, but, if you do, do you want to add them?

Also, I'm wondering what do you think those stats should have been to be considered "performing as expected" or "over-performing."

Since, we've got 7 new-to-UMass players hitting the floor next year, what are some benchmarks we should expect from them?

I'm talking about their college careers, not their first year. At no time did I say that. I am very hopeful this years new guys will have better first years than the 2016 class. I am hopeful that they have better careers as well. But judging each on just one year doesn't make any sense. And my initial response was a retort to judging them before our class new played any years, never mind one.

Good timing, as now McCall can actually speak about him at the UMass Club event tonight in Boston.
