I actually don’t think he will this time cause he knows he can’t afford to get this wrong.

Ha... that's funny..... That is the exact reason he will screw this up.

He needs to allow a committee of people to pick the next coach and just worry about the actual contract. If he does that, I think Umass Basketball will be OK.

This is where the slippery slope stuff comes up. While you want some input from a guy like Cal or even Pitino, you don't want to get caught up in feeling like you are doing them a favor. I think that's why Bruiser got hired and I definitely think that is why DK got hired.

When you are offering a pittance of a salary, that may be OK. It sounds like Umass is going to spend some respectable money this time so they may be able to weed through the "maybe's" pretty quickly and get some better pedigree in here to choose from right out of the gate.

If history is any guide, this hire will either be very good, or very bad, and nothing in between.

Remember, we do have a search firm working on this. My questions is "what exactly is their role"? They won't make the final decision, but does RB have to pick from the people they deem as finalists? And I'm assuming that those finalists, after having conversations with the search firm, have shown some interest in the job.

I'd sure like some clarification on the process.

Cal - yes…..Pitino has already put his opinion on Twitter, that’s as close as he need be. I wonder how many people know that Kimani Young from UConn was an assistant to Richard P at Minnesota and FIU

Search FIRM, vs. no Search Committee?
source?

Matt doesn't seem to name a Search FIRM...

^ SignMan, from the Matt Vautour article you linked:
UMass is using the search firm Turnkey, which is run by former Boston College athletic director Gene Defilippo, who has ties to Schmidt as well. Using a search firm potentially makes it possible to do this quietly.

^ The only thing Bamford is using that search firm to do is to act as a go-between so that Bamford can have discreet communications with potential candidates and be shielded from FOIA records requests. The search firm isn't really doing much of anything.

The role of a search firm is to vet candidates so gauge interest find the dirt etc and keep majority of the info out of the public eye. Can’t freedom of information act the search firm email and call logs you can do that with bamford

The more I learn about Kimani Young, the more I like him. He's an excellent recruiter and played for Don Haskins!

I worry that he hasn't been a head coach before, although he looked cold as ice when Hurley was ejected.

well, yup, but it was sorta buried in the section re: Schmidt, rather than a better, IMO, stand-alone reference to the entire picture.

Maybe I can attribute it to a Matty flaw, a genetic inheritance from his parents who graduated from the not Ivy prep Everett High School Class of 1965...
oops, that's my class, too, and EHS football coach Moody Sarno was one of our English teachers, who dedicated the Monday after a football Saturday classroom to a rehash of the game (home game attendance was always at least 10-12,000; even once 25,000 sardined fans.
Maybe that explains the signs.
