Series Against Harvard

Post by scorpio » Tue May 30, 2023 11:29 pm

How come UMass only hosted Harvard once in football?
Was Harvard paying UMass guarantee money for all these games?

Pretty clear that it is about attendance and brand. H stadium is much larger and those games could draw bigger crowds at H for both teams.

Remember this is all pre-ESPN and sports channels, one had to attend the game or listen to the radio only. I really doubt much, if any, $$ exchanged hands at all.

Not sure if it's still true, but at one point wins against Ivy League schools didn't count towards FBS bowl eligibility. Only FCS conference for which that was true.

It does not seem as though the games, had they been played in Amherst, would have been close to sell outs based on these Wikipedia attendance figures. With the exception of the '73 game....

As we can all see, this is not pretty clear at all.

Even their attendance last year was mostly on par with ours sans the Yale rivalry game:
