UMass transfer portal news - 2024

Maybe someone made him an offer he couldn't refuse and he'll sign quickly.

Very disappointed about losing Cohen! Tough to get good big men. Surprised we couldn’t keep him.
Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024
the NCAA did what you wanted, but because players now make $ for playing, federal courts ruled players cannot be stopped due to transferring multiple times. It's "restraint of trade" I think. There are several proposals in congress to bring some regulation, but don't hold your breath waiting for action from there.TheInsider wrote: Mon Mar 18, 2024 3:03 pm Hold up.. I thought good players only left MAC schools.. not A10 schools.. in all serious though the NCAA needs to do something. Players should get 1 free transfer. After that you sit out. Unless your coach bails or gets fired. Then you can go without sitting out.

I'm gonna see who comes in before I weep about who leaves. Good luck to them all. I'm pulling for the guys who stick it out and play for UMass, not for the biggest bag. I trust that Frank reloads and we are still very competitive. He did it last year

Josh Coen made all A10 first team, of course a bigger schools with lots more NIL money were going to come after him. The first day of the portal opening is turing into the first day of NFL free agency. It's sad that college athletics has come to this.

FYI - The transfer portal entry dates are from March 18 until May 1, so it's going to be a long 6 weeks.

Tough to have a brand new team every year. Even with the school is giving kids a bag.. they still bounce. I’ll see what the roster looks like this summer and root for who is left. But, the ones that stay are definitely staying for the MACtion.

How much did Dayton give their guy to stay last year? He's 2× better than Cohen.
Don't know if it's about $ for Cohen. We're not paying guys 500k/year, but what the heck did Dayton give Holmes to stay?!

Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024
This period reminds me of the one and done era where coaches whined about it and blamed some coaches for it ((ie Calipari). However the coaches and schools adapted to it and the programs that have been successful so far are the one who take advantage of it. Frank needs to realize the freshmen recruit model is a waste as player will not stick around anymore when the going gets good(ie NIL Cash). Let’s Find the next rentaCenter player (ie Cohen) and play for now and fuck the future bullshit as it will never come in this era!
Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024
I can't remember exactly how he said it, but last off-season Frank said something to the effect of he wanted to get a back to the basket big man who he could run the offense through. I was and will continue to be skeptical of that plan for a team of UMass' resources. Having taken that path for 2023-24, does Frank want to go in a new direction for 2024-25, and why has his thinking changed?TheOFFSeason wrote: Mon Mar 18, 2024 1:16 pm Where Cohen ends up will be interesting…I’m guessing FM trys to lure more of a defensive/athletic/rim protector at the 5 and be more of a perimeter scoring/driving offense.

I don't think Frank was ever 100% sold on Cohen, but his staff did the legwork and convinced him that he could play. They were right of course, but I think Frank wants a more athletic player at that spot. Frank was really tough on Cohen throughout the season, partly because that's what he said Cohen wanted, but also (my opinion) because he didn't rebound or defend well enough due to a lack of athleticism. That's what I think Frank will be focused on getting.
I'll be interested to see how Cohen does at his next stop. He was nothing but a great guy for this one season and I don't hold a grudge against him for leaving. BUT, I think this was a great level for him. There were nights when he dominated and others nights when he got dominated. His success so was so matchup dependent, and just like he had a slight drop-off in productivity from the NEC to UMass, I think he'll see another drop-off if he goes up another level.

Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024ange depending on who we pickup
He was good here and had a great attitude, but he's not irreplaceable. The style of play may change depending who we pickup, but it seems that the back to the basket type of game is transitioning to a more spread out, athletic game for a while now. I think the times of a coach playing a certain style and recruiting that type is evolving into more of a coach adjusting to what he gets year to year. Much more on the staffs now to assemble a team

Floyd, Umass is fucked for the short term. You should start weeping now.
Recruiting A-10 level players to come in for 1 lame duck season before they backslide is a recipe for disaster.
Re: UMass transfer portal news - 2024
Yeah…he made all A10, UMass got 20 wins….and a seat in front of the TV for the post season.
At the end of the day/season UMass did no better with him than it did without him.
