2025-26: Cornell (10/31 and 11/1)

Post by econalum » Wed Oct 29, 2025 8:56 pm

Cornell has not played a game yet this season and is ranked 20th. 2 games are scheduled in Amherst.

UMass is 5-2 and ranked 13th. UMass is 3-1 at home to date.

As a proud alum of both universities, I predict a UMass sweep. Weird to be cheering for both sides.

I'd LOVE to see these universities schedule a Lacrosse game; it is not a bad bus ride. 4.5 hours,

coming this weekend for both games. if this was the 70s 0r 80s Halloween Night on Campus would be terrifying. Southwest would be burning. looking forward to the matchup. Cornell is solid and we will need to be clicking on all cylinders. gonna be fun!!

That second article explains this:
While the Red has been limited to practice and a pair of exhibition contests, Massachusetts (5-2-0, 0-1-0 Hockey East) is nearly a month into its regular season. Due to the Ivy League’s restrictions on start dates and game limits, Cornell regularly begins its seasons against out-of-conference teams having already played 4-6 games
I don't get the overlap of conferences here. Cornell is in both the Ivy League and ECAC. This article mentions the Ivy but Cornell refers to the ECAC when mentioning their conference. Whatever, I'm not super into college hockey.

^Ivy league hockey is confusing.

All Ivy League programs that have hockey (both men’s and women’s) compete as part of the ECAC. However, my understanding is that they still must comply with Ivy League rules. This includes but is not limited to not offering scholarships and playing less games than everyone else.

So even though Cornell is ECAC, they still refuse to play the maximum amount of games allowed.

To further confuse things, if you go to an Ivy League school’s d1 rink, you might see Ivy League championship banners for hockey. Even though the Ivy League doesn’t sponsor hockey, it awards (or maybe the members that play award…I’m not sure) an Ivy League championship. This is given to the Ivy League school that has the best winning percentage each year in games only involving Ivy League schools. There is no autobid associated with winning the Ivy League for hockey. It’s like winning the Kennedy Cup or whatever UML vs UMass is called nowadays.

By the way- the Ivy League schools refusing to expand number of games played and trying to prevent the ECAC from doing so is the reason hockey east exists. BC, BU, Providence, Northeastern and New Hampshire wanted to play more games like the western schools were. Ivy’s said no. Those schools bolted from the ECAC, invited UML and Maine and formed Hockey East. If I have some of these facts wrong, please correct. Hockey east formed a year before I was born.
UMass Football: 22-3 at home when I was a student.

2-1 UM win before family and close friends…..can’t go head to head with Trick or Treat and expect to win…..both UM goals were Power Play (first 2
Mins Per 1 and last 2 Mins of Per 3) , the only 2 penalties on Cornell and both on the same guy! MH played another great game - BIG TIME in Per 3!!

Cornell outplayed the boys convincingly in P1&2!
Seemed win every puck battle! Yikes!
MH saved the day.

Good win last night against a very good program. The team found a way to win, let’s make two tonight.

I agree. Great win last night, but let's not repeat last weekend's results in Omaha.

With Trick or Treat last night hopefully will get more than the crowd last night and I know last night’s people in the seats was less than the official 3081 as there were a lot of tickets on Seat Geek that never moved!

Well, I 'win' as both teams split. Cornell looked strong - excellent skating and defense. They are fast and tough.

UMass did not look sharp at all live. Lots of poor passing, and several key penalties in 3rd (Most were bad officiating, imo)

Very low attendance, maybe 20% - Halloween Night 2? BTW, very few students were seen in Amherst or on campus in the afternoon. Terrific day to commute to Amherst, perfect Fall afternoon for walking and foliage.

Long season, and let's hope that they connect better on passing moving forward.
