Game 8, 2025-26: Harvard (12/3)

Post by MikeUMA » Mon Nov 24, 2025 9:43 pm

UM is off for over a week, next in action against Harvard, at Mullins on 12/3.

The Crimson are currently 4-3, with a D-3 win (MIT) in there. They put a scare in Penn State in the valley last week, but dropped one to BU on Saturday.

Two chances to scout them before we play
at BC on Wednesday at 4 PM
home for Bryant on Saturday at 2 PM
Both are on ESPN+

Harvard lost to BC and beat Bryant. It's a game we should win, but I haven't figured out how this team will play yet.

Harvard is #197 in NET and we are #208. In ESPN's BPI, Harvard is #225 and we are #145. So that tells me to not pay attention this early in the season!

Interestingly, we have even records in Quad games. We're both 1-2 against Q3, and 3-1 against Q4.

A couple stats that stand out to me: Harvard is at 316 in Sports Reference's ranking in points per game (69.6), and KenPom as them at 341 in adjusted tempo. If we can get a normal amount of shots to fall, we should be okay.

We have nearly identical KenPom rankings. Harvard 194, us 197.

Harvard has only used 2 starting lineups this year. The top 4 remain the same and the other spot has been shared, 6 games to 3. What is interesting is that all 6 previous starters are between 6'2 and 6'7. They only attempt 53 shots per game and we average 60. 20 out of their 53 are from three and they are at 37% as a team. However, 3 guys make most of them.

Battie (6'7) is 20/30.
Barbour (6'4) is 22/52.
Pigge (6'5) is 11/32

The other 3 starters are 10/44 (under 25%).

They do have 4 guys with size, but they don't play much.

7'0 (260) Parrish plays 7 minutes a game.
6'10 Ace-Nasteski plays 6.5 minutes.
6'9 Sullivan plays 8 minutes.
6'9 Dror has played in 2 games, 4 total minutes.

Nobody else is over 6'7.

I've got more, but that's enough for now.

Just a couple of tidbits.

Although they play small, they rebound pretty well. The have a 32 to 31 advantage and held their own against BC and Penn State.

Don't foul them. They shoot free throws at 80% as a team.

Look out for Robert Hinton. He takes a ton of shots and is very athletic. Doesn't shoot the 3 at a high percentage, so don't bite on the fake! He wants to pump fake and blow by his man to the hoop where he can convert and shoots 88% at the line. Last year he put up 9 points on 4-9 shooting against us as a freshman.

Opener of the 2012-13 season against Harvard. Crowd was energetic. Student section was full. Madness at Mullins.

I hope that we can get back to those times.

That's pretty much the only time "UMass" and "Amherst" should be used together.

Feels like the Harvard game in 2014 was the turning point of this program.

Trey Davis would have hit that shot at the buzzer, think the whole program is different today.
