Game 25, 2025-26: at Coastal Carolina (2/7)
Re: Game 25, 2025-26: at Coastal Carolina (2/7)
Preface: I wasn't able to watch the entire game, and missed most of the OT.
Danny's liabilities were on full display today. I counted 3 times when Coastal tried to foul him, and I think they were all 1 and 1 situations. Good strategic move on their part. He's .348 from the line. Exploit that shit.
Putting up one 3pt shot in a game? OK, if the defense gives it to you, take it.
Two? Eh, I don't love it. He's .188 career. There's likely a better play to be made.
Three? No, not smart ball.
Four? Seriously? Emphatic no.
Everyone has a bad game, so I don't wanna get too down on him. I want him here and hope he can work on his craft in the offseason.

Yep, 100% on Frank. UMass was the more talented team once again, but the sum is less than its parts. Gotta make free throws. Gotta make shots near the rim. How have those two things not gotten better throughout the course of the season?
Frank spent too much energy jarring at the officials especially when we had a sizable lead. One of them got annoyed and said "that's enough". Honestly surprised he didn't get T'd up in this game. But I think it impacted how the rest of the game was officiated to some degree.
Feel bad for Clerc. Doesn't get a board going into the under 4 timeout of the 1st half and Frank screams at him and he gets planted at the end of the bench for the rest of the game. Maybe could have contributed some meaningful minutes in a game that went 3 overtimes.
Parker got screamed at too for committing that offensive foul at the end of the first half. FM said "I told you 9 f***g times not to do that". Well the message isn't getting through, how about coaching it better?
Banks played his ass off. For a game that is supposedly "meaningless" he wanted to win really bad and did everything he could to try and make that happen. The CCU coach gave him a big hug in the handshake line and had some encouraging words for him.

Give WBB more money.

All fair points & I should have been a little more specific. I love DHS, he's a great competitor. But we need 12-14+ pts consistently from him to be in the upper level of the league. A game like today where Green bottled up Leo, we need another scoring option inside.MakeMullinsGreatAgain wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 4:56 pmOh I don't know - maybe grabbing 20 boards - and adding 10 points! DHS is not a scorer - we have 3 scorers, Leo, Banks and KJ - DHS is a decent offensive player but he is our 4th option. I don't know if they ever run plays for him - he scores off offensive boards and when teams leave him wide open for 3's and he hits 2 out of 10 of them

Kid is one of the better perimeter players we've had here in quite a while. Somehow they have to figure out a way to keep him & K'Jei on the floor together longer to have 2 good perimeter options. But Marcus has been a joy to watch this year, too bad he's only here for 1.Sheck wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 5:28 pm

Frank can take solace that the season will be over soon and he will be able to become a college TV analyst
Re: Game 25, 2025-26: at Coastal Carolina (2/7)
The Coastal coach should be fired twice. They didn't foul twice when up by 3. We only screwed up once and it took a circus shot 3 by them to tie the game. There are a hundred things you can look at in this game that would have changed the outcome. I'm going to be a glass half full guy for a few reasons.
First, KJ is back. Second, Leo will probably not have another 6/18 from the field and 5/11 from the line game. Third, DHS being that active on the boards (20 rebounds) is a good sign.
There was a lot of bad as well, but I don't think we were in contention for the NIT anyway, so this loss doesn't matter that much.

Yes, there are 100 things that could have changed the game. BUT they all lead up to the crucial moment where coaches earn their salary, and Frank didn't earn it. You foul, plain and simple. While that kid hit a circus shot that had no business going in, he's not hitting it if he is at the free throw line instead of the 3-point line.69MG wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 11:14 pm The Coastal coach should be fired twice. Frank could have the Miami (OH) roster, and I dont think Umass's record would be all that different. A good coach can take a good roster and make it great. Frank has shown he can take a good roster and make it mediocre.

Court storm in Chapel Hill unfortunate due to injuries. Let’s court storm in Amherst to give Frank assistance in exiting a proud program that he is destroying with TERRIBLE court side attitude wrt player interaction (aren’t coaches “teachers” also?), Xs and Os,
and nepotism that hurts the program. He’s a 180 from gentleman Jack. ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

Came here to post something like this, and I wrestle with it. On the one hand, he takes what I consider to be his best roster at UMass, and underachieves. On the other hand, he's a very good recruiter and these guys wouldn't be here if he wasn't the coach. So do I want a guy like Frank or DK that is a below average coach but an above average recruiter, or do I want a guy that might not get the best athletes but can draw up plays and schemes, be an effective teacher/motivator, and has a great feel for the flow of the game? I don't know. It would be nice to have a coach that can do both.TheInsider wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 7:55 am Frank could have the Miami (OH) roster, and I dont think Umass's record would be all that different. Re: Game 25, 2025-26: at Coastal Carolina (2/7)
UMass ends up losing both MAC-SBC challenge games with a total of 27 missed free throws and 54.2% FT percentage, losing the two games by a total of 9 points. They went 21-36 against Marshall and 11-23 against Coastal. The DNA of this team is blowing big leads late and being a poor free throw shooting team. I think they've been better at that the last few weeks, but this was a stinky reminder of what they've been all season long.
Hopefully these close games strengthen their mental toughness and pay off at the end of the season, but it's tough to have any confidence in that when the FT shooting is so bad.

Take the later. We have the facilities and the $$ to overcome any recruiting shortcomings.Juice Stand wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 8:53 amCame here to post something like this, and I wrestle with it. Yes and yes. I love these two guys. Parker has another year of eligibility, but will probably leave because he's one of Frank's top hate targets. I really don't understand why Frank recruited him if he hates the way he plays. I'm glad we have him now though and hope he sticks around.Floyd wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 5:47 pmKid is one of the better perimeter players we've had here in quite a while. Banks' father was in the stands for this game, so he obviously wanted to ball out for his family, and he must have had some additional connection with the Coastal coach. They showed some footage of Banks and the coach chatting each other up pregame.

That was one hell of a game, a blast to watch! Obviously very frustrating as well. I don't even know what to say anymore about it... at this point I'm just going into each game with an open mind and trying to enjoy the team.
I don't know if someone keeps this stat, but we must lead the nation in blown leads of a certain margin, no matter the end result.

Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades
