I really hope this squad all stays together until Tre Mitchell's senior year at the very least, no doubt in my mind this will be a Top 25 team.
No doubt ....in fact at this pace if Tre stays through senior year he is a potential top 10 pick .... Did you see how he moved his feet switching out on a guard

Pretty good first game. Happy to see the team back in action, certainly.
Did we get a definitive explanation for Dibaji not playing? I also hope to see Preston back soon; he adds a lot of versatility and depth.
He was asked about it in his post game presser. He called it a "coaches decision". He then made some references to being on time, academics, etc. It is something to keep an eye on.

To me, it looked like both teams were rusty and disorganized, which is not surprising. But our talent level, even without Preston and Dibaji, was an improvement over last year's squad.
Gasperini looked a little lost at times and DD could have been better but we will see how things develop as they get used to playing together and work out the bugs.
I like that we have more ball handlers than last year and Garcia driving to the basket puts Sean East to shame. He didn't look like a freshman. Fernandes fouled too much but had 5 assists and delivered the ball adeptly to Tre. Kelton looked to be improved.
MM really has something to work with this year. The talent is there. Just have to get better organized and build 9n this win.

^ I was thinking the same thing about looking disorganized. Then I remembered that they didn't return to practice until Saturday after almost a month off. I like the upside!!!

MM also said in the podcast that all the players have never been on the court at the same time this year

There is absolutely 0% chance Tre is ever a top 10 pick in today's NBA. Great college player, but he does not have the pure athleticism that the NBA looks for in their 5s and 4s these days. Maybe 2 decades ago. He's a late 1st rounder at best but probably a 2nd. And that's no knock on him whatsoever.
I mean look at the kid Garza from Iowa. Best player in the country and they're not even sure he's going to be drafted.

I have to agree with Champ.. as wonderfully skilled as Tre is.. he just doesn't have that pure athleticism.. hes that college dominate guy that will kill it in Europe.
The amazing thing about Tre though is at the end of a game someone will ask you what Tre's line was.. you will say " I think he had 14 and 6 " Then you find out he went for 30 and 12

The press looked good for game 1 with mostly sophomores and freshman.

So happy to be able to watch again. Thought we played about as well can be expected in a weird time. They were good against a team that wasn’t very good (outside of that Walker kid — he is excellent)
Obviously a lot of talk about Tre and Garcia. Tre is just so goddamn versatile on offense — he can score in so many ways. I think he would play 30 minutes at most every school in the country. When is the last time you could say that about a UMass player?
Garcia was great at both ends — tremendous body control and strength. I wondered how he would do at the point and I’m not so worried anymore — I think he can handle it just fine — dude is just a guard. He was getting a lot pub before the season in a lot of places and I wondered if he was really that good. I means how did so many high majors miss on him. He played in the EYBL and at Brewster, not exactly two places where kids are hard to find. But it seems like they did miss on him. Kudos to our staff for not.
Like the steadiness Fernandes and DeGray bring out there. Scored 94 with our two shooters not shooting very well so that’s encouraging. Defense was okay — seemed like their first game out there.
Anywho promising debut.

According to this, Sunday's game is in NU's Cabot Center (cage), where NU women play, not Matthews. And yes Matthews is a cold place to play without spectators.

All I know about Tre's future NBA potential is that during his freshman year he totally outplayed the number 8 pick in this year's draft. The sign of a great player is the ability to put up quiet numbers. Those were a pretty quiet 31 and 11. If you're looking for an NBA comp I would submit Danilo Gallinari.

^ That's correct. This is from the Northeastern BB writeup on tonight's game:
The Huskies will host UMass on Sunday inside the Cabot Center on Solomon Court. Game time is set for Noon and will be televised on NESN. Fans are not permitted to home events through the end of 2020.
