ADMIN NOTE: I broke out this own thread, which started with this post:

Why is George gone?

Since you asked, I got the word in August. The department made changes to game operations, and I was not included in them.
They’ve eliminated the role of “in-game host” and moved Matt Goldstein to the table to do the PA announcing.

Sorry to hear that. I always enjoyed your announcing. I can still remember that when my daughter worked two summers on internships with the Pittsfield Mets, 98 & 99, you did the announcing. UMass is the looser on this deal.

I think we can all agree that taking away the position "in-game host" is addition by subtraction.

Really disappointed about the news, George. You did a great job at the mike. I'll miss seeing and hearing you.

Just hope this isn't him moving his schtick from the floor to the table.

This is a reason to pile on. I'll also miss hearing your voice as the PA. Sorry to hear the news, George.

Replacing George with Matty G is like giving up a pick-6 when you're on the goal line. We lose something good and replace it with something not good. Big negative swing.

ughhhhhhhhh it is becoming an NBA game, I enjoyed George's subtle humor.
so game opps fails before the season starts:
1. 4p opener
2. george gone
not starting strong!!

Absolutely blows my mind.. he must have some deep connections and the right people liking him to keep this gig going. Was literally the worst part of the game day experience and then give another role.

It's not the same gig. And Matt already does the PA for other UMass sporting events (Lax comes to mind, Softball too), as well as color commentating for Football on the radio. In those settings, he's actually pretty good. He's not George, but he's not going to ruin your viewing experience either.

^^ that's very good to hear I did not know he did it for other sports. I just pictured someone similar to what he has done in the past in this role as well. Sounds like it will be a good net change just getting rid of the hype man then.
