^ I guess the 12/1 $$$ situation didn't matter. Of course, we'll have to wait for details.

I knew it was going to happen when Bamford disappeared from the sidelines and tweeting about the football team season like he did in the past. He was pissed at the BC game when it was obvious the team looked unprepared for the first game of the season!

There was no way for Whip to come back next season. He has left the cupboard pretty empty (hope I'm wrong). This season was his chance to show how much he has grown the program. All he cared about was offense and not about the team aspect of football and I'm pretty sure Bamford saw that.

I do think the Maine coach will be the prime target. I see better things ahead for UMass football!

It'd be stupid to fire him now instead of 12/1, unless someone paid the extra money for the buyout.

The 200k difference might not be a big deal for them, especially with DK coming off the books soon. Or it's more important to get rid of him now than to have a lame duck coach/staff over the next two weeks that will only be wasting time and money on the recruiting trail.

Until we make a serious commitment to paying for FBS-level salaries and FBS-appropriate facilities, as well as finding a conference, it's going to be a tough sell.

Really wished Whip would have been able to pull another rabbit out of his hat, but It seems the financial constraints the program lives with along with the facilities and independent status were too much to overcome. I'm hoping that somehow the next HC will not be put in the position of bringing a knife to a gun fight as Coach Whipple was.
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

Mark is so happy right now. Been banking money for a few years. Contract ext. Money buyout. Walk away with 500 grand plus probbaly from a crap program with crap facilities that is poorly funded that is supported by a minimal fan base that packs a run down high school stadium with 7000 folks. Mark might be at the airport looking for the island to fly to for about 4 months. Laughing all the way. I tip my hat to mark. He won today finally. Mark got the best of cover up man little bammy.

It is disappointing that this didn’t turn out better but it needed to end.

This program can succeed and I define succeeding as winning 6-7 games a season under the current conditions. What I am most concerned with is being competitive game in and game out and the program representing the University in the best possible light.

Personally I feel there is much talent in this program they just need to get bigger on the DLine, deeper at running back and tight end.

Curtis impressed me in his limited role so I am curious to see what he brings next year and I’m also curious to see what Jaret Pallotta can do.

Let the search begin.

This sounds familiar. Whipple deserves no blame ... it's everyone else's fault.

Please.

I don't think anyone said he deserves no blame. When you've won 16 games in 5 years there's plenty of blame to go around, but you simply can't deny the issues this program faces. From lack of conference, antique crumbling stadium, a "tv deal" where you're lucky to get picture and sound both working together etc. It's gotta be a hard sell to get enough highly rated players to come here. Some like to say "winning cures all", but I do wonder if winning is even possible given the current circumstances. Back in the CM days, they tried pretty hard to promote this move to FBS and I attended many related events. They handed out stickers and brochures that promoted "All In". Problem is that everyone wasn't "In" and I don't see it being different 7 years later. If this is going to succeed things have to change at a level far higher than the coach.

I'd love to see some of the infrastructural issues around the UMass football program improved, from coaching salaries to facilities to a great conference affiliation. But I'm not convinced any of those things kept us from winning 6-7 games this season. I think in the end, most of that came down to recruiting and in-game management.

You can argue recruiting is dependent on some of those external-to-coaching factors, but I think many here would agree that there are FCS programs out there that are able to recruit a solid team that would compete better than this UMass team did at the FBS level. So I still think a lot of this falls back on Whipple and that it is largely his responsibility. The in-game stuff is totally his responsibility.

I wish Whipple the best. I think he gave it his all, but this program needs a different type of leader. There are obstacles, but UMass could still be a draw to a lot of kids who are currently choosing to go to inferior schools because of a savvy football coach. If we had such a coach, we can turn some of that around. I believe that, and I believe it's possible despise the many obstacles. And I believe that is the critical first step on the path to turning this thing around.

It's on Ryan now. I'm happy about the news today, and I hope this is the beginning of the turnaround. If not, we lost little by making this move. FCS is a loser, and has been since the late 70s. I say go big, or go home. Hopefully the third time is the charm for UMass and we can get the program stabilized. I have a hell of a lot more faith in Ryan doing it than our previous AD.

Go U!
