Dinged-up UMass welcomes Black Bears to Mullins
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/08/2010
Amherst, MA - Daryl Traynham's foot, ankles for both Javorn Farrell and Terrell Vinson - they're all healthy enough to play but problematic enough to keep three key players in the University of Massachusetts' rotation well below 100 percent.
After Saturday, the Minutemen will have 10 days between games, allowing coach Derek Kellogg to rest some of his players as they focus on final exams.
Until then he's hoping his players can keep grinding through two more games at the Mullins Center, tonight against Maine (7 p.m.) and Saturday against Seton Hall.
“We have a bunch of guys who have played a bunch of games in a short period of time. We worked hard at the beginning of the season because I wanted to make sure we were ready to go from day one this year. I pushed these guys pretty hard and when you do that their bodies break down a little bit,” Kellogg said. “We can't do anything until after the Seton Hall game. That's when we can give them some time off. I don't want them practicing long hours during finals. I want them to concentrate on academics. It works in both ways for us. We've managed to get by to this point, but I'm looking forward to having a full roster of guys who are healthy and ready to go.”
While Traynham isn't fully healthy, Kellogg has greatly welcomed his presence.
“It gives us one more body, a guy I know is going to come in and play hard,” Kellogg said. “We can pick up the tempo a little bit more and pickup fullcourt and give guys the necessary rest so they can play as hard as I want them to play for the full 40 minutes.”
Traynham's presence at point guard also allows Javorn Farrell to move back off the ball.
“I like Javorn better at that wing spot. He's not trying to do as much as fast. I think he rushed it a little bit the last couple games. He's more naturally a secondary ball-handler. I don't think it wears him out as much.”
The Black Bears arrive in Amherst struggling at 2-5. They haven't beaten a Division I team since the season opener, a 71-66 overtime win over Utah Valley University, a transitional D-I school. Since then they've lost to Maryland, Notre Dame, Quinnipiac, Brown and most recently Delaware State, 75-56 on Monday. Their only other win is over Maine-Machias, an NAIA school.
Maine has four players scoring in double figures led by junior guard Raheem Singleton, who is averaging 11.3 points and 3.6 assists per game.
Troy Barnies is its top inside presence. The 6-foot-7 senior forward averages 10.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He's led the team on the boards in six of their seven games.
WILCHER RETURNS - The game marks the return of former Minuteman Travon Wilcher. The 6-foot-7 Springfield native played in six games for the Minutemen in 2008-09 before transferring north.
He's appeared in three games for the Black Bears and averages just 4.3 minutes per game.
This is the second member of Travis Ford's freshman class of 2008-09 that the Minutemen have played against. They competed against Max Groebe and Cornell last year.
UMASS vs. MAINE RIVALRY - Maine is a rare team to play UMass in men's and women's basketball, ice hockey and football. UMass won in football. The schools start a three-game hockey series Sunday at 4 p.m.
The women's basketball team's play in Orono on Dec. 29.

Minutemen hoping to rebound after loss to Boston College
Jay Asser, Massachusetts Daily Collegian, December 07, 2010
Massachusetts men’s basketball team will look to rebound from its first loss of the season as it returns home to face Maine Wednesday night at the Mullins Center after suffering its first loss of the year over the weekend.
On the biggest stage of the young season, the Minutemen (7-1) fell to Boston College, 76-71, at the TD Garden on Saturday night, ending their longest winning streak since 1998.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg knows that the first loss brings with it questions about the legitimacy of his team’s record, but his focus is on the next game.
“I think you have to be temperamental with the guys and make sure we get back on track to winning ways,” Kellogg said. “Anytime it’s your first loss, it’s the first time you have to deal with real adversity. We’ve dealt with adversity within the games but luckily to this point, those games had all worked out in our favor.”
Minutemen guard Anthony Gurley, who had a homecoming against the Eagles (6-2) as a Boston, Mass. native, struggled in the first half of the contest. He registered two points and two fouls heading into halftime as UMass faced an 11-point deficit.
Gurley, along with the rest of the Minutemen squad, came alive in the second half and made a run, but couldn’t overcome BC in the end. After a disappointing performance by his team, Gurley isn’t getting caught up in the early ups and downs of a long season.
“We just have to get back to the drawing board,” Gurley said. “We have a lot of things to work on. We just have to move on and prepare for Wednesday for another big game against Maine.”
After playing as well as UMass has to begin the year, some coaches would feel that a loss can keep a team from getting complacent and feeling indestructible. Kellogg, however, doesn’t buy into the notion of a “good loss” and has a different philosophy.
“I like to win and build off wins myself,” Kellogg. “I’m hoping that the guys realize that when we play the game the way it needs to be played, we’re usually successful.”
Maine, meanwhile, enters the matchup with the Minutemen on a four-game losing streak. The Black Bears (2-5) dropped their most recent contest against Delaware State, 75-56, at Alfond Arena.
Despite taking a one-point advantage into halftime, Maine was outscored 46-28 in the second period by the surging Hornets. Delaware State was led by Casey Walker’s 25 points, while Murphy Burnatowski gave the Black Bears 10 points and eight rebounds.
For the season, Maine has four players who are averaging double-digit points in Burnatowski (10.7), forward Tony Barnies (10.9) and guards Raheem Singleton (11.3) and Gerald McLemore (10.0).
“They’re a good team, they really run their offense well,” Kellogg said. “They’re a well-rounded team, they mix up defenses. I think they do a great job in their half-court offensive sets. I mean they really are accurate and go at it and it’s going to be a tough game for us.”
UMass and Maine will meet for the 58th time with the Minutemen leading the series, 41-16. The two teams have played in Amherst on 31 occasions, with UMass holding a 27-4 advantage. At the Mullins Center, however, the Minutemen are a perfect 2-0 against the Black Bears.
The last game between the teams was on Dec. 23, 2003, as UMass earned the 67-60 victory. Former big man Rashaun Freeman sparked the Minutemen with a then-career high 23 points to fight off a second-half comeback attempt by Maine.

Minutemen trying to improve foul trouble
By Herb Scribner, Massachusetts Daily Collegian December 07, 2010
Fouls are a double-edged sword for the Massachusetts men’s basketball team.
The Minutemen (7-1) not only squander from their own difficulties at the free throw line, but also give up a slew of fouls to the opposition.
“Yeah I think that’s what we’re going to work on, trying to not foul as much,” guard Anthony Gurley said. “We’ve been very aggressive on the defensive end which sometimes causes us to foul. We’ve definitely got to work on not putting the other team at the line. That’s what hurt us in the past two games.”
Through the first eight games of the season, UMass has committed 173 fouls. Center Hashim Bailey is at the head with 23 personals.
Against Boston College last Saturday, the Mintuemen played aggressively. The team committed 24 fouls and guard Javorn Farrell fouled out of the game after his team-leading fifth personal.
Playing aggressively fits right into the direction that UMass coach Derek Kellogg is looking to send the Mintuemen, and he continues to push the team to play tougher.
“I don’t want to get away from what’s made us successful this year,” Kellogg said. “I want my team to be aggressive and people to say that they’re up on you and play hard and play tough.”
Kellogg offered more praise to his team’s standoffish nature by comparing it to previous UMass teams that did not play in a similar fashion.
“It’s better than it’s been in the past where your guys are kind of matadors on defense and not pressuring the ball and letting teams shoot layups,” Kellogg said. “I rather have it be where they’re a little rougher and tougher.”
“We’ve done a nice job of getting it to a certain point,” Kellogg said. “Now, can you do that without hacking, reaching and putting them to the free throw line on a consistent basis?”
These fouls and hard-hitting plays hurt the Minutemen down the stretch in terms of giving up points, as the Eagles (7-2) went 19-for-24 from the free throw line. The 19 made shots more than doubled the Minutemen total from the charity stripe of 8-for-14.
“We just can’t get outscored by 15 points from the free throw line every game; that’s not conducive to championship basketball,” Kellogg said.
“I thought what hurt us more than anything was we put them to the free throw line 24 times,” continued Kellogg. “And a lot of them were at places on the floor, where, why would you do that when the guy’s going away from the basket at half court? Why would you reach in and put the guy to the free throw line?”
Gurley struggled from the line, going 2-for-4, which included a pair of shots that, if made, would have put UMass ahead of BC and completed the comeback.
“I don’t try to miss free throws,” Gurley said. “It’s just one of those things, it’s in and out. We’ll try to knock them down next game.”
Farrell also struggled from the line, going 2-for-5 which included a missed attempt on an and-one situation which would have brought the Minutemen within one point of the Eagles.
Despite these missed key shots, Kellogg explained that free throws weren’t the only issue that the teams suffered at the TD Garden.
“We’ve missed a lot of easy shots throughout the game, whether it’s the free throws, the different jumpers,” Kellogg said. “I don’t think you can zero-in on just the free throws.”
Still, the third-year coach sees the Minutemen calming down on the aggressiveness and not fouling as hard during the rest of the season.
“There’s got to be a happy medium, and we’ll get there,” Kellogg said.

UMass Drops 68-56 Decision To Maine
The Minutemen fell victim to a 17-2 Maine run midway through second half for their first home loss.
From UMass Athletics, 12/8/2010
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass shot just 22.9 percent in the second half and Maine recorded 19 second-chance points as the Minutemen (7-2) fell to the Black Bears (3-5), 68-56 on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Maine used a 17-2 second-half run to take control of a game that was tied, 32-32 at halftime. Anthony Gurley paced the Minutemen with 12 points, while the Black Bears were led by Gerald McLemore's 12.
After shooting 38.5 percent in the first half, the Minutemen went 8-of-35 in the second half for an overall shooting percentage of 29.5. Maine, after starting the game 1-of-10, went 20-of-40 the rest of the way to shoot 42 percent from the game. After the 11:10 mark, when UMass led, 42-40, Maine outscored the Minutemen, 28-14.
While Maine turned the ball over 20 times to UMass' 16, the Black Bears outscored the Minutemen off turnovers, 20-12.
UMass took a three-point lead, 38-35 with 14:43 to go on a Sean Carter lay-in, but the Minutemen recorded just one field goal over the next 5:50 and Maine used a 7-0 run between the 10:34 and 9:10 marks to take a 47-42. That run would eventually turn into a 17-2 run, led by 3-pointers from Terrance Mitchell and Gerald McLemore, to give Maine a 13-point lead, 57-44 with 5:45 to go.
The Minutemen were unable to mount a late comeback, recording two field goals over the last five minutes of the game.
Daryl Traynham and Sampson Carter each added eight points for UMass. All eight of Carter's points came at the free throw line.
Both teams went without a field goal for the first four minutes of the second half, with a Malachi Peay free throw for Maine accounting for the only point over that span, before Gurley scored on the break with 16 minutes left in the game after making a steal to give UMass the lead back, 34-33.
The Minutemen built a nine-point lead in the first half, 20-11 with 8:55 remaining on a Daryl Traynham 3-pointer, but the Black Bears immediately went on a seven-point run to make it a two-point game and the remainder of the half would remain tight, with Maine briefly taking a two-point lead with 2:03 left in the half before UMass tied it, 32-32 heading into halftime.
Gurley led UMass with seven points in the opening half with Sampson Carter adding six as the Minutemen shot 38.5 percent from the floor. Alasdair Fraser did the most damage for Maine in the first half with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting as his club recovered from its slow start to make 10-of-18 over the remainder of the half, for a 39.3 percentage.
UMass jumped out to an early 12-5 lead seven minutes in as it held Maine to 1-for-10 shooting to start the game. Six different Minutemen scored the team's first 12 points.
The Minutemen remain home to host Seton Hall on Saturday in the back end of a doubleheader with the women's team. The Minutewomen tip off vs. Binghamton at 4:30 p.m. and the Minutemen and Pirates are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
