Redmen Beat Coast Guard 95-68;
'Trigger' Hits With Both Barrels

The Massachusetts Collegian, January 11, 1955

The UMass Redmen snapped a six game losing streak by defeating Coast Guard, 95-68, in New London, Conn., last Saturday night. The game was a referee's delight, as they called a total of 64 fouls.

"Trigger" Burke was the big man of the night as he poured nine field goals and eleven foul shots, a total of 29 points, through the rim. This victor over Coast Guard enabled the Curranmen to even their record at seven and seven.

The Coast Guard five got off to a fast 8-0 lead in the first half. John Howard got the Redmen started as he dropped in the first two pointer for his team. From that point, UMass started to drop shots into the hoop from every angle. At half time, the Curranmen had a convincing 40-23 command.

The UMass five kept right on rolling in the foul-packed second half and Coast Guard never got back into the game. Coast Guard had 37 personals and one technical called against them. UMass countered with 24 personals and two technicals.

Coast Guard lost five men via the foul route while the Redmen lost only one.

The UMass yearlings (freshmen) subjugated the Coast Guard yearlings in the first contest.
