UMass men's basketball back on the road to play East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team spent less than 48 hours on campus and had one day of classes before they got back on a plane Monday.
The Minutemen (6-3) play at East Carolina at 7 tonight. UMass will then play Friday against Siena in the Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase in Springfield before getting an 11-day break for finals.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg wasn't worried about travel fatigue.
“We should have legs,” Kellogg said. “Can we makes shots? Can we play defense the way we need to?”
This is ECU's second season under former Auburn coach Jeff Lebo. The Pirates are 4-3, but three of their wins came against non-Division I opponents - Milligan, Coker and Chowan. Their lone win over a Division I team came against Appalachian State, 67-47 on Nov. 22.
ECU enters tonight's game on a two-game losing streak with losses to Old Dominion and Charlotte.
The game should feature a pretty good matchup of point guards as the Atlantic 10's and Conference USA's assist leaders square off. Sophomore Chaz Williams leads UMass with 6.3 assists and 2.8 steals per game, which is third in the Atlantic 10. Both averages rank 17th in Division I entering the week.
Like Williams, East Carolina's Miguel Paul is a transfer. The 6-foot-3 junior guard began his career at Missouri. He's second in Conference USA in scoring (17.0 points per game) and first in assists (5.9) and steals (2.1).
The Minutemen are second in the country in steals with 11.22 per game, behind only Syracuse (12.50), while the Pirates are fifth (10.71).
“It is a mirror game,” Kellogg said. “We're both kinda young, kinda athletic, kinda shooting a lot of 3s. It'll be interesting to see how fast the game goes. They want to play fast, but not quite as fast as we do.”
UMass, which was effective scoring inside the arc in Saturday's loss to Miami, will likely rely on that again as ECU opponents shoot .269 from 3-point range.
Paul is one of a handful of transfers on the Pirates roster. UMass has seen junior Shamarr Bowden before. The 6-foot-4 guard played a year at Charlotte, then a season at Chipola Junior College before resurfacing at ECU, while senior big man Austin Steed started his career at South Carolina. Former Rhode Island guard Akeem Richmond is on the East Carolina roster, but he's sitting out this season under NCAA transfer rules.
Darrius Morrow is ECU's No. 2 scorer at 12.4 point per game. He's No. 12 on ECU's all-time points list, but was held scoreless against Charlotte Saturday.
Morrow is one of five Pirates listed at 6-foot-8. Like the Minutemen, their roster is stocked with similarly built long athletic players.
The game figures to be Sean Carter's last trip to his home state. Carter is a native of Fayetteville, which is two hours southwest.

Men's Basketball Hangs On For 63-58 Win At ECU
Battle of two halves as Minutemen hit key free throws in final minute of play.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - UMass hit four free throws in the final 40 seconds of play as the Minutemen held on for a 63-58 win at East Carolina on Tuesday nightat Minges Coliseum. Freddie Riley led all players with 14 points which he scored in the first half. UMass will face Siena on Friday in the Hall Of Fame Holiday Showcase at the Mass Mutual Center.
The Minutemen (7-3) jumped out to a 40-21 lead at halftime, but the Pirates mounted a furious comeback effort in the second half to cut the lead down to one-point with 40 seconds left in regulation. Sean Carter, Rapiael Putney, and Chaz Williams each hit free throws in the stretch to seal the win, while the defense forced a turnover and two missed three-point shots.
East Carolina (4-4) was led by Darrius Morrow (13 points) and Maurice Kemp (12 points). Miguel Paul and Shamarr Bowden each had 10 points to round out the Pirates' top scoring.
The Pirates started the second half with a 13-2 run in the first four minutes of play. Morrow hit eight points in the run after being held to just four in the first half.
A pair of Javorn Farrel free throws stemmed the tide, but a Kemp lay-in and free throw made it 44-37 with 15 minutes left in the second half.
The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half as UMass held on to a 10-point cushing until the Pirates put together a 10-2 run making it a 59-58 game with 40 seconds left.
Riley sparked UMass with 14 points off the bench in the first half as he drained four three pointers including a pair of them in a 17-3 run that put the Minutemen up 33-14 with just over six minutes to go. The Minutemen's pressure defense held the Pirates scoreless for over four minutes in the run.
UMass took its largest lead of the first half on a Williams jumper with 3:16 to go which put the Minutemen up 22 points, 40-18.
Putney and Carter each finished the game with nine points. Carter had seven rebounds, while Terrell Vinson had a team-high nine.
The Minutemen finished the game shooting 21-of-48 for the game (43.8%) highlighted by a 15-of-28 performance in the first half.
Free throws proved the difference maker down the stretch as UMass was 15-of-25 for the game and East Carolina was 9-of-23 overall.

UMass men's basketball holds off East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The University of Massachusetts finally won a close game, but not the way it wanted to.
The Minutemen's dominant first half was almost wiped out by a flat start to the second half, but they held on to beat East Carolina 63-58 Tuesday at Williams Arena.
All of UMass' previous six wins have been by at least 14 points. The Minutemen's only previous tight game had been Saturday's loss to Miami.
Tuesday started like another blowout before ECU stormed back. With UMass (7-3) up 40-21 at halftime, ECU (4-4) opened the second half on a 13-2 run that brought the crowd of 4,419 back into the game. The once confident Minutemen seemed to get tentative against the onrushing Pirates.
“We're more frustrated with ourselves because of the way we played down the stretch,” sophomore point guard Chaz Williams said. “We were a little complacent with the results from the first half and we didn't come out with the same aggression.”
With 2 minutes, 11 seconds left in the game and UMass leading 57-50, Terrell Vinson took a charge to give UMass possession, but Williams quickly turned the ball over and Miguel Paul buried a 3-pointer to make it 57-53 with 1:49 left.
The Minutemen hurried the ball ahead to Cady Lalanne, who missed his first shot, but grabbed the rebound and was fouled on his second attempt. The freshman made both free throws to make it 59-53.
Paul missed two free throws on the other end, but ECU got the rebound. Paul then missed a 3-pointer, but ECU got the rebound again and Paris Campbell hit a 3-pointer to make it 59-56.
UMass tried to use the clock, but it took too long and Williams' attempt as the shot clock expired missed the rim. ECU attacked and Paul beat the defense for an easy layup that made it 59-58 with 40.7 seconds left.
Raphiael Putney then went to the line and made the first of two free throws. Sean Carter grabbed the rebound on the missed second and was fouled. Carter, who missed two late free throws at Miami Saturday, made one of two to make it 61-58 with 34.3 seconds left.
“I felt confident at Miami too,” Carter said. “I knew I had to put them in this time. There was no time for mishap.”
Paul lost the handle at the other end and gave the Minutemen the ball back. Putney made one of two free throws with 20.4 seconds left to seal the win.
Williams made some big shots for the Minutemen, but he struggled handling the ball with 10 turnovers to go with his 10 points and four assists.
“Coach is going to get at me,” Williams said. “I'm ready to embrace it.”
UMass had 24 turnovers in the game. Freddie Riley led the Minutemen with 14 points, but they all came in the first half. Lalanne had six points, six rebounds and four blocks and slowed big man Darrius Morrow (13 points) in the second half.
“That's the second time he's done that recently,” Kellogg said of Lalanne, who also shut down Towson's Robert Nwankwo. “He's a bigger body that can use his weight in there. He did a nice job of corralling Morrow.”
Sophomores Jesse Morgan and Putney replaced Riley and Javorn Farrell in the UMass starting lineup. All four players seemed to thrive in their new spots early.
Led by Riley's torrid 3-point shooting, UMass was dominant in the first half. Riley hit four of five from deep en route to 14 points before intermission. All nine players who checked in scored as the Minutemen's pace seemed to rattle the Pirates, who hurried shots throughout the half.
Kellogg saw the comeback coming.
“I've coached here (with Memphis and George Mason) and we've never really blown anybody away. I said at halftime this is going to be a nail-biter.” Kellogg said. “I feel good that we won the game.”
The Minutemen will head back to Massachusetts to play Siena at 7 p.m. Friday at the MassMutual Center in the Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase.

Sampson Carter's basketball season over for Minutemen

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Sampson Carter's season is done.
The University of Massachusetts junior forward will have surgery to repair an injured labrum muscle in his hip and will apply for a medical redshirt.
He did not make the trip to North Carolina with the Minutemen Tuesday. UMass beat East Carolina 63-58.
“It looks like he's going to do the surgery and apply for a redshirt, if he's going to have to play at a lesser percentage or just can't do it physically,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “It's probably a good move for him. I would like to have had him around as one more option, but it's about what's good for the kid.”
Carter was tied for second in scoring for the Minutemen with 8.6 points per game off the bench.
Because Carter played in just seven games, which is less than a third of UMass' total games, and the season hasn't reached the halfway point, he's eligible to receive a medical redshirt.
He'll return next year as a junior and have two seasons left.
Redshirting Carter means UMass will have one fewer scholarship to offer next year as he'll join Raphiael Putney and Chaz Williams in the class of 2014.
Freshman Maxie Esho will see the biggest increase in minutes in Carter's absence, while Putney, Terrell Vinson and Javorn Farrell will all get additional playing time.
THIEVES - The game between two of the nation's top five teams in steals per game produced 22 takeaways. UMass had nine steals, led by Williams' four, while Miguel Paul had six of ECU's 14.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen head back to Massachusetts and will face Siena at 7 p.m. Friday at the MassMutual Center in the Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase. The start time is somewhat tentative because it's the third game of a quadruple-header.
The Saints are 3-5 after beating Albany on Monday.
HOMECOMING - Sean Carter, playing in his final regular season game in his home state, scored the first UMass basket for the fourth time in as many games and finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
