UMass men's basketball returns to Springfield against Siena
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 12/9/2011
A year ago, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team was never better than in its three-game stretch in the Tip-Off Classic at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.
The Minutemen will try to continue their success in coach Derek Kellogg's hometown tonight when they play Siena at 7 in the Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase.
“We've always enjoyed going down there playing in front of the hometown. I'm hoping our guys play well and show the people of Springfield how we're playing and how hard we can play and compete,” Kellogg said. “It's been a good venue for us. The last couple of year's we've actually played well down there. Hopefully we can continue that trend.”
UMass is 42-24 all-time in the MassMutual Center.
The Minutemen's game will be the third in the Holiday Showcase's quadrupleheader. American International plays Philadelphia University at 3 p.m. Springfield College plays Trinity at 5 p.m. Fairfield and Old Dominion follow the Minutemen and Saints.
Siena arrives in Springfield at 3-5. Its win over Albany on Monday snapped a five-game losing streak that included losses to St. Bonaventure, Georgia Tech, Vermont, St. Peter's and Loyola-Maryland.
The game features a pair of big scorers with small statures. Saints freshman Evan Hymes is their leading scorer at 14.9 points per game despite being just 5-foot-8. He'll matchup with UMass' 5-foot-9 point guard Chaz Williams.
Junior big man O.D. Anosike figures to be a handful. He's averaging 11.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. He had 21 points and 18 rebounds against Albany.
“He's very, very good. The one thing that scares me is that he really rebounds the ball,” Kellogg said. “We have to be really conscious of him and make sure we play help defense on him.”

Williams, Riley Contribute To Comeback Win Over Siena
The Minutemen improved their record to 8-3 in a close game at the Mass Mutual Center.
December 9, 2011
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - UMass improved their record to 8-3 in a comeback-win over Siena (3-6) on Friday night at the Mass Mutual Center. Chaz Williams scored 20 points in the second half alone, giving the Minutemen the boost they needed for the victory. UMass will return to the Mullins Center on Saturday to face Quinnipiac.
Freddie Riley was a key contributor throughout the game, scoring 20 points off of six three-point shots, tying his career high for three-pointers.
Williams tied his career high 8 field goals and ended the game with 22 points. He also stole the ball three times and dished out six assists.
Kyle Downey and OD Anosike lead Siena in points with 23 and 22 respectively. Anosike also grabbed 14 rebounds, including six offensive.
The Minutemen went on a 16-3 run early in the second half, including three three-pointers in three minutes from Riley to give UMass their first lead in almost 15 minutes of play. Williams and Raphiael Putney were the key contributors for the rest of the half, scoring a combined 21 points out of 25, sealing their hard-fought victory.
Riley had another impressive first half performance off the bench, scoring a trio of three-point baskets and tallying 11 points, but the Minutemen struggled with their shooting, ending the half with a 36.8 field goal percentage.
The Minutemen finished the game shooting 41.9 percent overall, going 31-74. Accurate free throw shooting made the difference at the end of the game, with UMass shooting a perfect 100 percent from the line in the second half.

UMass men's basketball pulls out another close win
By Matt Vatour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 12/10/2011
SPRINGFIELD - Trailing by double digits early in the second half, Freddie Riley brought the University of Massachusetts back into the game. Raphiael Putney kept them in it and Chaz Williams put UMass over the top.
The Minutemen survived a lackluster start to escape with an 82-78 win Friday in the Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase at the MassMutual Center.
Trailing 51-41 5 minutes, 24 seconds into the second half, Riley buried a 3-pointer. After O.D. Anosike answered inside, Riley hit another 3, firing up the crowd of 4,236. The shots were two of the three 3-pointers he made during UMass' 14-3 run that put the Minutemen ahead 57-54 with 11:25 left.
“I was just happy to be making shots finally and help my team,” Riley said. “I was just playing my role and the shots went in.”
Siena had a counterpunch and surged back ahead 67-63 before Putney took his turn. Against the Saints' zone, he made three straight floaters from just inside the free throw line as part of his solo 6-2 run that tied the game 69-69 with 4:05 left.
“Putney has the length that he has and he made a couple really nice plays against the zone,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “Those are much-needed baskets because we were struggling against the zone.”
From there Williams took over. Until that point, Williams was 5-for-15 from the floor, often the victim of unkind rolls on layups that rimmed out. But he didn't miss when it mattered. The sophomore point guard scored 11 of UMass' last 13 points on three drives and five free throws.
“On any given night, any given time, any one of us guys or any one of the brotherhood can be a closer,” Williams said. “It's just about wanting to take the next step and bringing the team to a victory.”
After two free throws by Javorn Farrell put UMass up 78-75 with 21 seconds left, Siena point guard Evan Hymes raced to the basket trying for the easy two, but Sean Carter leapt for an emphatic blocked shot.
Riley grabbed the rebound and got the ball to Williams, who was fouled with nine seconds left. He made both free throws to make it 80-75. Kyle Downey (23 points) made a 3-pointer with four seconds left to pull the Saints within two and Siena called timeout.
The Saints sent Williams to the line again and the point guard made both to close out the win. Williams said he's spent a lot of time practicing free throws to be ready for those moments.
“I was always taught, being a point guard, you might have the ball in your hands toward the end of the game, so it's always good to make free throws,” Williams said. “I just wanted the victory, just like the guys did. We all wanted the victory. So I didn't want to let my teammates down.”
Williams finished with a career-high tying 22 points, six assists, two turnovers and three steals. Riley added 20 points and Puntey scored 13. Anosike, who was Williams' AAU teammate before college, had 22 points and 14 rebounds for Siena (3-6).
UMass (8-3) has eight days off for final exams before playing Quinnipiac on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.

Derek Kellogg hopes close games benefit men's basketball team
By Matt Vatour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 12/10/2011
SPRINGFIELD - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team has been in three straight nail-biters after the first eight games were decided by an average of 22.4 points per game.
UMass beat Siena 82-78 in the Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase at the MassMutual Center Friday night.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg hoped the close game experience would be valuable down the road.
“I think it's definitely been a learning experience, since we lost the one in Miami. I felt we made some mistakes down the stretch,” Kellogg said. “I thought we did a pretty good job this evening of getting it close and then making some free throws. I thought Siena played close to as good as they can play.”
Sophomore Chaz Williams said the Minutemen practice close game situations in practice, but it's hard to simulate the atmosphere. Failing or succeeding in practice might mean the difference between having to sprint or not.
“It's nothing compared to a loss or a victory,” Williams said. “We got a lot of experience from it. We know the things we can do to succeed in close games. That's something you have to work on and that's something we have been working on with Coach.”
RILEY HOT AGAIN - After scoring 14 points in the first half of Tuesday's win at East Carolina, Freddie Riley barely played in the second half as Kellogg opted for more defense with a big lead. Riley started sharp again Friday with 11 first-half points and Kellogg rewarded him with 17 second-half minutes. Riley finished with 20 points. It was his first 20-point game of the season and the third of his career.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen (8-3) are off for eight days before hosting Quinnipiac on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center. The Bobcats are 4-4 after back-to-back wins over Hartford and Byrant. They are at Vermont on Sunday.
MISCELLANEOUS - UMass is 6-0 in Massachusetts with games played in Chestnut Hill, Amherst and Springfield. … Sean Carter's first-basket-of-the-game streak was snapped as Terrell Vinson scored the Minutemen's first points on a pair of free throws. Carter had scored the first basket in each of the last four games.
FORBES TO TORONTO? - Former Minuteman Gary Forbes, who played for the Denver Nuggets last season, signed a three-year offer sheet to join the Toronto Raptors, according to Yahoo Sports. The offer could be matched by the Nuggets.
