UMass men's basketball shifts focus to Dayton

AMHERST - While fans are still buzzing about the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's win over Xavier Tuesday, Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said the team has long since shifted its focus to Saturday's 6 p.m. game at Dayton.
“You can't have too many highs and lows in college basketball. You have to stay the course,” Kellogg said Thursday. “We have to make sure these guys understand it was just one game on the road to success.”
The Minutemen (19-8, 8-5 Atlantic 10) have a chance to win their 20th game for the 15th time in school history and the first since 2007-08.
But there's more on the line than milestones as the Minutemen are trying to improve their position for both the Atlantic 10 tournament and potentially postseason beyond that.
“It's going to be two teams that are in very similar positions and at this time of year, any wins are good wins,” Kellogg said. “It would help get us some recognition for postseason wherever that may be.”
The Flyers (17-10, 7-6) have been hard to figure out. They were 10-4 in nonconference play, beating several big opponents including Wake Forest, Minnesota and Alabama, which was ranked No. 15 at the time. They opened Atlantic 10 play with back-to-back wins over Saint Louis at home in overtime and then won at Temple.
After a setback at St. Bonaventure, Dayton beat La Salle and Xavier to position itself for a potential NCAA tournament bid. But the Flyers lost their next four games, including a home loss to last-place Rhode Island.
The pendulum seems to have swung back in their favor. They've won three of their last four and the loss was in overtime at Xavier.
If the Atlantic 10 had an all-transfer team, the two point guards meeting in this game would certainly be on it. UMass' Chaz Williams, who started his career at Hofstra, will be facing Kevin Dillard, who played two years at Southern Illinois before transferring to Dayton. The 6-foot-0, 170-pounder was a freshman Saluki in 2008 when UMass played there. He had 14 points and six assists off the bench in SIU's 80-73 win.
“Dillard played very well against us at Southern Illinois as a freshman,” Kellogg said. “He's kind of been able to do for Dayton what Chaz has been able to do here which is give them a guy that can score and can facilitate.”
Kellogg said Dayton could have the hardest gym in the conference for a road team to find success.
“It might be the toughest because they're guaranteed 13,000 every game. It's in a city where there's no pro sports team. That's the main attraction and with that comes a big-time home-court advantage,” Kellogg said. “That's what college basketball is all about. Can you rise to the challenge when there's 13,000 people against you? That's another sign to see how far we've come. Can we go play well in a hostile environment? I'm hoping we can go down there and play well. If we play a certain way we have a chance to beat any team in the conference.”
SCOREBOARD WATCHING - The Minutemen enter the game in three-way tie for third place in the A-10 with Xavier and St. Bonaventure. While Temple (11-2 A-10) and Saint Louis (10-3) have all but sewn up two of the four first-round byes in the conference tournament, there figures to be a fierce battle for the other two.
Xavier hosts Richmond Saturday, while St. Bonaventure is at Charlotte. Saint Joseph's, which is a half game back at 8-6, hosts Temple.
La Salle, which is tied with Dayton at 7-6, is at Fordham.
NOTES - Former UMass guard Rick Pitino was named as a finalist for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield. The Louisville coach is one of two coaches to take three different schools to the Final Four. The enshrinement class will be announced on April 2.
UMass' only Hall of Famer is Julius Erving.

DAYTON, Ohio - The Massachusetts basketball team endured one of its toughest shooting games and dropped a 76-43 decision to Dayton at the UD Arena Saturday night.
UMass (19-9, 8-6 Atlantic 10) shot a season-low 25 percent and committed 15 turnovers in dropping its second-consecutive contest to the Flyers.
Chaz Williams, who played 11 scoreless minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, led the Minutemen with 11 points and three assists. Maxie Esho contributed 10 points and tied his career-high with nine rebounds off the bench.
Dayton (18-10, 8-6) used some hot outside shooting in the first half and finish with 10 3-pointers en route to a 42 percent shooting performance. Chris Johnson made four threes on his way to a 20-point, 11-rebound night. Kevin Dillard had 11 points and seven assists.
With Dayton holding a 8-6 lead five minutes into the game, the Flyers got three triples from Luke Fabrizius to push their advantage to 17-6 with 12:39 to play in the first.
UMass got trimmed the margin to six on two occasions before UD took a 38-28 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the break, UD extended the edge to 16 two minutes into the period. UMass eventually used a 9-0 run to trim the margin to 40-34 with 13:36 remaining. But a 6-0 Flyer run put the game back into double digits and the Minutemen never recovered.
UMass returns to action when it travels to No. 22 Temple (22-6, 11-3) on Wednesday night. Tip off at the Liacouras Center is set for 7 p.m.

A 'no-show' for UMass men's basketball in loss at Dayton

DAYTON, OHIO - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg cautioned those wanting to celebrate too much following Tuesday's win over Xavier, and he was not shy about expressing his disappointment with Saturday's 76-43 loss at Dayton.
The Minutemen cut a 16-point deficit down to 40-34 with 13 minutes, 40 seconds remaining, but the Flyers went on to outscore UMass 36-9 the rest of the way.
The Minutemen were held to a season-low point total in a game full of season-worst numbers.
“It's different if you lose a close game and I feel our team scraps and fights to the end,” said Kellogg. “I thought we fought to a certain point and then after that we didn't play good basketball.
“It wasn't fun to watch. It wasn't fun to play in and it wasn't UMass basketball,” he added. “That's the one thing that I'm not happy with my team - that when it really got going (bad) we didn't play good basketball on both ends of the floor. At this time of the year that's pretty much unacceptable.”
The win denied the Minutemen, at least for the time being, their first 20-win season under Kellogg and dropped their record to 19-9 overall and 8-6 in the Atlantic 10. The loss drops them out of a four-way tie for third place in the conference and leaves them tied with Dayton one game behind Xavier and St. Bonaventure in the race for a bye in the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament.
The top four teams receive byes in the tournament. UMass closes the regular season with games at first-place Temple on Wednesday and at home against last-place Rhode Island on Saturday. But Rhode Island beat the Minutemen in Kingston on Feb. 1.
On Saturday, sophomore point guard Chaz Williams finished with 11 points for UMass but all of them came in the second half. He made his first field goal # a 3-pointer from the top of the key # with 14:52 to play. The conference leader in assists, averaging 6.3 per game, had just three against Dayton before fouling out with 2:36 left.
“I wasn't myself and I have to get my head back into the game,” said Williams. “Coach got the statement across (after the game) that we have to play UMass basketball and some guys have to step up, including myself.”
Freshman Maxie Esho was the only other Minuteman to finish in double figures as he scored 10 points.
As poorly as the first 25 minutes had gone for Williams and the Minutemen, a quick nine-point burst in the span of 1:14 gave the capacity crowd of 13,435 a moment of concern. The run began with Williams' 3#pointer followed by a conventional three-point play by junior forward Javorn Farrell and then a 3-point shot by junior guard Freddie Riley from the right wing on an assist by Williams.
That cut the Flyers' lead to 40-34 but they answered with a 10-1 run over the next five minutes before Williams made another 3-pointer.
UMass entered the game as the top scoring team in the conference, averaging 76.4 points per game, and had been held to fewer than 60 points just one other time this season in a 73-53 loss to Florida State on Nov. 24.
The Minutemen on Saturday set season-lows for points, field goals made (13) and field-goal percentage (25) and their seven assists were one off their season low of six against Florida State.
UMass made just three of its first 18 field goal attempts and trailed 28-18 at halftime.
Senior forward Chris Johnson led Dayton with 20 points and 11 rebounds. It was his sixth consecutive game scoring in double figures and he was one of five Flyers to reach double digits. Junior point guard Kevin Dillard finished with 14 points along with seven assists and just one turnover.
Dayton outrebounded the Minutemen 46-37.
“Those guys are resilient and I think they'll come back and play,” Kellogg said of his team. “I'm a little disappointed that some guys didn't play as well as they have been. We don't have a lot of margin for error and we can't have two or three guys not play well. It's not possible for us to win with. I guess, I'd call it a no-show.”
