UMass basketball hopes to be fan favorite in NIT at Madison Square Garden
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 3/27/2012
NEW YORK - Of the four men's basketball teams in the NIT semifinals tonight at Madison Square Garden, the University of Massachusetts has the shortest distance to travel, the biggest alumni base in the area and the only contributing player from New York City.
So the Minutemen are hoping to be the crowd favorite when they tip off at 7 p.m. against Stanford.
“We have a great group coming down,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “There's busloads of people coming from UMass, from Boston, from Northampton. We should have at least 2,500 fans.”
The Minutemen can add a fair contingent of Brooklyn residents because sophomore guard Chaz Williams will draw some fans from his native borough.
“He'll have as many fans as they'll let in,” Kellogg joked. “He's got a nice group of family and friends that have followed him around.”
Williams was popular with the New York media at Monday's press conference as he was interviewed by multiple newspapers and television stations. Fran Fraschilla of ESPN, the master of ceremonies at the NIT press conference/lunch on Monday said that Williams was “worth the price of admission.”
Williams said his team's style of play might attract some neutral fans.
“We're just a young group of guy that's never willing to quit,” Williams said. “We'll just keep fighting. I think people will look at that as a good thing.”
Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said he is impressed with Williams.
“He's incredible. He's such a little dynamo. He's quick. He's powerful. He's confident. He's one of the best guards in the country,” Dawkins said. “As a result, he's really helped his team get better.”
The fourth-year head Cardinal said he also likes his own team's improvement.
“I'm pleased with our development. We would like to have done better sooner. You never know when it's going to kick in,” Dawkins said. “Our kids have figured it out down the stretch, but we've played our best basketball as a result of that.”
Both teams seemed eager to extend their seasons at least two more days.
“We're still playing. There's only about 10 teams in the country still playing and we're one of the 10,” UMass junior forward Terrell Vinson said. “The goal is still to be playing around this time of the year.”
Stanford freshman guard Chasson Randle, who leads the Cardinal in scoring at 13.9 points per game, agreed.
“We're a fairly young team,” Randle said. “For us to get this experience is exciting. For next year this can be very helpful.
“You want to take every game as a learning experience,” he added. “Learn from your mistakes and learn from what you did well. We're definitely doing that as a team.”
Minnesota and Washington will play in the second semifinal tonight. The winners will advance to the final at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Here is a look at each of the four teams.
UMass
Record: 25-11 (9-7, tied for fifth Atlantic 10)
Road to New York: Won at Mississippi State (101-96), at Seton Hall (77-67) and at Drexel (72-70)
Leading scorer: Chaz Williams, 5-foot-9, sophomore guard, 16.9 points per game
Leading NIT scorer: Williams, 22.7 points per game in the tournament
Notes: The Minutemen are in the NIT semifinals for the third time, but have never won. They finished fourth in 1991 and second in 2008.
Stanford
Record: 24-11 (10-8, seventh Pacific-12)
Road to New York: Beat Cleveland State (76-65), Illinois State (92-88) and Nevada (84-56), all at home
Leading scorer: Chasson Randle, 6-foot-1, freshman guard, 13.9 points per game
Leading NIT scorer: Aaron Bright, 5-foot-11, sophomore guard, is averaging 18.7 points per game off the bench in the tournament
Notes: The Cardinal were 5-3 against NCAA tournament teams, beating Colorado twice and Colorado State, California and North Carolina once each. They lost to Syracuse once and Cal twice.
Minnesota
Record: 22-14 (6-12, ninth in the Big Ten)
Road to New York: Won at La Salle (70-61), at Miami (78-60) and at Middle Tennessee State (78-72)
Leading scorer: Rodney Williams, 6-foot-7, junior forward, 12.1 points per game
Leading NIT scorer: Williams, 22 points per game in the tournament
Notes: The Gophers lost preseason All-American Trevor Mbakwe to a season-ending injury after seven games, but have bounced back after initially struggling. Williams also leads Minnesota with 5.5 rebounds per game. The Gophers had lost seven of 10 games heading into the Big Ten tournament, but beat Northwestern in overtime in the first round before falling to Michigan in overtime in the quarterfinals.
Washington
Record: 24-10 (14-4, Pacific-12 regular season champions)
Road to New York: Beat Texas-Arlington (82-72), Northwestern (76-55) and Oregon (90-86), all at home
Leading scorer: Terrence Ross, 6-foot-6, sophomore guard, 16.3 points per game
Leading NIT scorer: Ross has raised his average to 26.3 in the tournament
Notes: The Huskies, like the Minutemen, want to run. The Huskies were ranked No. 34 in the country at 75.2 points per game in the regular season, 11 spots behind UMass at 76.8.
Minutemen look forward to playing in Madison Square Garden
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 3/27/2012
NEW YORK - Three University of Massachusetts basketball players - Chaz Williams, Raphiael Putney and Sampson Carter - had a little time to kill as they stopped at the Port Authority to change buses en route back to Amherst after their trip during spring break to Williams' home in Brooklyn last Thursday.
They left the station, walked across the street and stared at the building in front of them - Madison Square Garden.
“We were just taking it in. Getting mentally prepared,” Williams said. “We said 'Let's get this victory on Tuesday and let's keep it going.'”
The three Minutemen got on the bus and returned to Amherst knowing they would be back soon. UMass will face Stanford there at 7 tonight in the semifinals of the NIT.
In their last trip to the event in 2008, the Minutemen had a roster loaded with New Yorkers as Gary Forbes, Dante Milligan, Etienne Brower and Chris Lowe all had roots in the city.
But this time Williams is the only UMass player who grew up in one of the five boroughs.
“Growing up, Madison Square Garden was always the biggest and best arena around,” said Williams, who played in the building at the Jordan Classic while in high school and at the Holiday Tournament there when he was a freshman at Hofstra.
“Being able to play on the floor is a God-given blessing,” Williams said. “This is a special thing for me getting to play in front of my hometown and my home fans and the people that love me the most. It'll be fun to bring our style of play to New York.”
Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg has been to the building as both a player and an assistant coach. During his sophomore year at UMass, the Minutemen upset defending national champion and No. 1-ranked North Carolina in the Preseason NIT.
While coaching at Memphis, Kellogg was part of three teams that made it to the NIT semifinals. The Tigers won in 2002 and finished second in the 2005 preseason event.
“It's going to be great,” Kellogg said. “It's one thing being an assistant or a player, but to be a head coach roaming around the sidelines of a storied arena will be a good experience.
“It'll be good. I've been to a lot of different places. This will be another one to take off the bucket list,” he added. ”… There's a certain smell in the air, a certain feel when you walk in the building. It has a certain mystique that you don't get in a lot of new buildings. It's like when you used to walk into Boston Garden, or Fenway Park or the old Yankee Stadium. It's one of those places that still has that.”
It will be the first time in the building for most of the Minutemen.
“It's definitely exciting,” junior forward Terrell Vinson said. “It's the Mecca of basketball, the big city, the Big Apple. It's going to be fun.”
Senior center Sean Carter agreed.
“I'm excited to play on a big stage that everybody knows about,” Carter said. “Playing in an NBA arena is always a big thing.”
This is a return trip to Madison Square Garden for Stanford, which was in the NIT Season Tip-Off in November, and Washington, which lost to Marquette in the Jimmy V Classic, and to Duke in the Carquest Auto Parts Classic, both in December.
“To come back here and play in the Garden where so many great players played before is exciting,” Cardinal freshman guard Chasson Randle said. “It's going to be a good experience.”
CALIPARI-PITINO LITE? - If UMass beats Stanford and Minnesota beats Washington, the NIT championship game would feature Tubby Smith, a former Rick Pitino assistant coach, against Kellogg, a former John Calipari assistant, meeting two days before their former bosses clash Saturday in the NCAA Final Four when Kentucky plays Louisville.
Kellogg said he got a text from Calipari after the Minutemen defeated Drexel 72-70 in the quarterfinals March 20. The Dragons are coached by James “Bruiser” Flint, who was an assistant to Calipari at UMass before taking over as head coach.
In his text, Calipari “said congratulations, but he couldn't watch it,” Kellogg said. “He's been pretty helpful this season and especially on this run. He's checked in with texts and calls. You don't realize he's giving you advice 'til you realize he's giving you advice.”
ROMAR-CARTER - Before the start of Monday's press conference, Carter approached Washington coach Lorenzo Romar and reminded him that Carter had played against his team when the UMass senior center was a freshman at Oregon State.
“That was you?” Romar asked, smiling and giving Carter a hug.
MISCELLANEOUS - Steve Lappas, another former UMass coach, will call tonight's game on Westwood One Radio.

UMass Falls To Stanford IN NIT Semifinal, 74-64
Chaz Williams leads all scorers with 19 points.
From UMass Athletics, 3/27/2012
NEW YORK - Chaz Williams scored a game-high 19 points but had his homecoming spoiled by Stanford as the Cardinal outlasted UMass 74-64 in the National Invitation Tournament Semifinal at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night.
The Minutemen took their first lead since early in the game with just over eight minutes to play, but Anthony Brown hit a 3-pointer to push the Cardinal back on top, then later scored seven points during an 11-3 run that put the Minutemen in a hole that was just too large to overcome.
UMass (25-12) shot 34 percent and was just 5-of-22 from outside as it made its third NIT Final Four appearance in school history.
Freddie Riley came off the bench with 10 points, while Raphiael Putney and Terrell Vinson finished with eight points apiece.
Stanford (25-11) was led by Brown who scored a season-high 18 points. Josh Owens added 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Cardinal outrebounded the Minutemen 54-45 and held a 19-13 edge in second-chance points thanks in part to 19 offensive boards.
The Cardinal led by 12 halfway through the first half before UMass closed the gap to 36-33 at the break.
UMass tied the game on two occasions in the second half before taking a 50-49 lead on a Riley triple with 8:05 left.
UMass got to within three points with 4:10 remaining but Stanford made 12-of-15 at the free throw line down the stretch to keep the Minutemen comeback hopes at bay.
NOTES
- Chaz Williams led the team with 19 points, the 23rd time this season he has scored 15 or more points in a game. Williams averaged 20.0 points per game this postseason, 21.8 in NIT games.
- Williams tied his season low in assists with three. The last time he shared the ball three times was in the 76-43 loss to Dayton on February 25. Jesse Morgan scored just two points off of one field goal on the night, the last time this happened was also in the loss to Dayton.
- Freddie Riley had 10 points on the night, more than doubling his total points in previous NIT games this season.
- Terrell Vinson scored 8 points against Stanford, the first time he failed to reach double-digit scoring in NIT games.
- Anthony Brown scored a season high and a team high 18 points for Stanford. His previous high was 16 against Bethune-Cookman on December 19.
- The Cardinals had four players in double-digit scoring: Brown with 18, Josh Owens with 15, Aaron Bright with 13, and Chasson Randle with 12.
- UMass led Stanford two times during the game, first with 17:03 left in the first half and then again with 8:05 left in the second half.
- This was the first game UMass has played at Madison Square Garden since the 92-85 loss to Ohio State in the 2008 NIT Finals on April 3. UMass hasn't won a game at The Garden since April 1, 2008, when they defeated Florida 78-66.

UMass men's basketball ends season with loss to Stanford in NIT semifinals
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 3/28/2012
NEW YORK - The clutch shots that fell during so many big moments in the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's first three NIT games were too often off the mark Tuesday.
Stanford withstood the Minutemen's comeback midway through the second half in the National Invitation Tournament semifinals and UMass ended its season with a 74-64 loss to the Cardinal at Madison Square Garden.
Stanford (25-11) advanced to play Minnesota (23-14) in the championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Gophers defeated Washington 68-67 in overtime in the second semifinal.
The Minutemen closed their season at 25-12. The considerable crowd of UMass fans gave the players an ovation as they walked off the floor.
“I'm proud of our team,” said Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg. “These guys took us on a ride that was special. These guys played their hearts out all season long. I'm proud to say I'm the coach of UMass with these guys.”
The Minutemen were on their heels throughout. They trailed by 12 in the first half but Javorn Farrell gave them a lift late in the half as he helped cut the deficit to 36-33 at intermission.
“It was clear that we weren't playing our regular UMass-style basketball,” senior Sean Carter said. “We just wanted to get locked in and focused.”
Throughout the season, the Minutemen have thrived off opponents wearing down against their press. But the Cardinal never wilted even when UMass pulled ahead 50-49 on a 3-pointer by Riley (10 points) with 8 minutes, 4 seconds remaining.
“That was something that bothered us early in the season, responding to changes in momentum,” said Stanford big man Josh Owens, who led the Cardinal with 15 points and 12 rebounds. “I was really proud of the way the guys fought back.”
The teams traded baskets before an 11-2 run by Stanford provided the knockout blow.
The Minutemen did not shoot well from any distance. They were 5-for-22 from 3-point range as part of a 23-for-68 overall effort from the field. And they were 13-for-22 from the free-throw line.
“We didn't make some of the shots we're accustomed to making,” Kellogg said. “When we've done that this season we haven't fared so well.”
Williams scored a game-high 19 points, but needed 18 shots to get there. He had three assists and four turnovers.
“We tried to crowd him as much as we could and keep people around him in the paint,” Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said. “The kid is terrific. He's going to be a great player for a long time to come.”
The Minutemen and foul trouble held Stanford freshman Chasson Randle to 12 points, but Anthony Brown had 13 of his 18 in the second half.
Williams said this season is something to build from.
“It was a great year. A great journey,” Williams said. “Playing for coach and playing with these guys was great. A lot of people didn't expect us to be here. … It was a great run. ”
Kellogg said he is disappointed to go home, but proud of the season.
“We go home at 25-12. Not bad for a team that was picked 12th (in the Atlantic 10) in the preseason,” Kellogg said. “I think these guys played with something to prove all season long.”
Sean Carter leaves with UMass men's basketball 'going in right direction'
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 3/28/2012
NEW YORK - With 27.1 seconds left and Tuesday's game out of reach, University of Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg sent redshirt freshman Andrew McCarthy to the scorer's table to give senior Sean Carter a curtain call.
Carter got a standing ovation when Kellogg replaced him.
“Sean came to UMass with some blind faith,” Kellogg said of Carter, who transferred from Oregon State after his freshman year. “I told him I love him and that I appreciate all that he's done for the program, my family and UMass fans in general.
“He's a kid that has brought energy and unquestionable character,” Kellogg continued. “He's been a great kid who has been an ambassador for our team and our program. … I'm happy for Sean. He's improved a bunch and is a great person and young man.”
Carter finished with six points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in the 74-64 loss to Stanford.
“When I came in. It was a new program. I knew it was going to be a learning process,” Carter said. “I stuck with it because I knew coach had faith in me and I had faith in him. We battled every year together. I'm happy to see it going in the right direction on our way out.”
Fellow senior Matt Hill did not see action in the National Invitation Tournament semifinal.
Sophomore Chaz Williams praised both seniors.
“Those guys brought it every day in practice and helped us get to where we are today,” Williams said. “Matt Hill doesn't play as much, but he's one of the most vocal people on our team and not everyone sees that.”
CROWD - The NIT will likely be disappointed to see UMass depart as the Minuteman fans accounted for a lot of the crowd at Madison Square Garden.
Including the band and quite a few students, the UMass fans filled almost the entirety of one end zone. There were several other pockets of Minuteman fans throughout the arena.
“Their students were great making a lot of noise,” Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said. “It disrupted us at the free throw line.”
Williams saluted the crowd.
“The whole brotherhood wants to thank the fans for coming out and supporting us,” he said. “They did a great job all year. … We had a good run because of them so we thank those guys.”
UMASS AT MSG - The Minutemen fell to 9-14 all time at Madison Square Garden including 2-10 in the NIT.
FACES IN THE CROWD - Quite a few former UMass players made the trip to Madison Square Garden as Luke Bonner, Kennard Robinson, Dana Dingle, Shannon Crooks and Andy Maclay were in attendance.
Ex-Minuteman coach Steve Lappas called the game for Westwood One radio.
Another former UMass coach and current Drexel coach Bruiser Flint attended, as did his former assistant at UMass, Chuck Martin, who is now the head coach at Marist. Martin was on John Calipari's staff at Memphis with Kellogg.
New York Giants star receiver Victor Cruz, a UMass alum, was in the stands as were new Minuteman football coach Charley Molnar, UMass President Robert Caret and Amherst Chancellor Robert Holub.
Despite loss to Stanford, UMass men's basketball has bright future
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 3/28/2012
NEW YORK - Start the countdown clock.
Tuesday's 74-64 loss to Stanford ended the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's 2011-12 season and officially started the wait for what figures to be the most anticipated season for the program in recent years.
After the Atlantic 10 tournament, coach Derek Kellogg confirmed that an NCAA tournament bid would be the goal for the 2012-13 team. His team's strong play against higher-seeded teams in the National Invitation Tournament has only reinforced the feeling that the goal is reachable. Unlike the last NIT run by the Minutemen in 2008, which felt like the zenith, this one seems more like a launching pad.
Not much was expected of this UMass squad. The Minutemen had lost their leading scorer Anthony Gurley and were coming off a season that finished with a four-game losing streak capped by a 70-58 hammering at home by Dayton in the Atlantic 10 tournament.
The Atlantic 10 coaches and media expected so little, that they picked the Minutemen 12th in the conference's preseason poll and most of the national magazines didn't peg them much higher.
But from the beginning it was clear that this UMass team was better.
The biggest difference was Chaz Williams. The sophomore point guard not only gave the Minutemen the distributor and leader who had been missing during Kellogg's first three seasons, but he changed the team's personality. The entire team began to mirror his energetic upbeat approach.
Williams' speed helped allow Kellogg to change his system from the ill-fated, dribble-drive motion offense to a transition-based, fast-paced, run and press approach.
Williams didn't do it alone. Senior center Sean Carter had the best year of his career at UMass. He was a key cog at the front of the press and the team's leading rebounder. He won't be easy to replace, but he is the only regular who the Minutemen lose.
The team got a huge lift from the resurgence of junior Terrell Vinson. After a promising freshman year, Vinson struggled with injuries and inconsistency as a sophomore. But the Baltimore native looked reborn in the new offense.
His low-post game became a reliable weapon and his 3-point shooting was much improved.
Sophomores Raphiael Putney and Jesse Morgan, who showed promise at times last year, blossomed into solid starters with scoring potential. Freshman Maxie Esho, who got better as the season went on, could be a regular at forward or even at center. Another step forward for any or all of them would only increase the potential for UMass next season.
The Minutemen produced their most wins since 2008 despite season-ending injuries to promising big man Cady Lalanne, who could have helped Tuesday, and reliable forward Sampson Carter. That left UMass with an eight-man rotation.
As the win total increased so did the fans. The Minutemen lost just one game all season at the Mullins Center and saw the fans become louder and more plentiful as the season progressed. If next season gets off to a strong start, UMass basketball could once again be a tough ticket.
The Minutemen figure to land much higher in next season's Atlantic 10 preseason poll. Perennial heavyweights Temple and Xavier each lose multiple key players and Saint Louis and St. Bonaventure will graduate their best player in Brian Conklin and Andrew Nicholson, respectively.
Not only will UMass get Lalanne and Carter back, but there will be reinforcements as well. Freshman Jordan Laguerre sat out this season, but was able to practice before an injury slowed him. He'll be added to the mix at all three perimeter spots.
Incoming freshmen point guard Trey Davis and big man Tyler Bergantino should contribute and will add depth for the Minutemen. Kellogg has one other scholarship he could still use as well.
Barring injuries or a big step back, UMass has a chance to be in the conference title mix.
But until then, the anticipation has plenty of time to build. The start of practice for the 2012-13 season is less than seven months away.
