Backstory

This game finally renews the cross-state rivalry with BC, one that UMass fans, and the UMass Athletic Director, have been asking for for years.

Ryan Bamford had stated in previous interviews that he's been trying to get BC to agree to play us again, after the Commonwealth Classic series went dark after the 2011 game, and one-off Coaches vs. Cancer games in Boston in 2013 and '14 didn't bear further fruit. Coincidentally or not, UMass won all of those last three games, and BC stopped returning our phone calls.

In 2024, it looked like we might get to play BC again, as the Basketball Hall of Fame was going to bring UMass, BC, Providence, and Temple to Mohegan Sun. There wasn't a guarantee that UMass would face BC in day two of the bracketed event, but there was a chance.²⁾³⁾ That event was hit with a setback as both Providence and BC ultimately backed out.

Indications are that the Hoop Hall stayed involved, and got BC to agree to play us in Springfield, in a Hall-sponsored game, the Hoop Hall Classic, and here we are.
