UM got strong defense, 23 points from its bench, and 77 percent free throw shooting to win its fifth-straight and its first since 1963 at Rutgers to grab a tie for the top spot in the A-10.
The Minutemen shot only 32 percent from the field in the first half, but Rutgers matched it with 25 percent shooting of their own. The Scarlet Knights missed 18 consecutive shots early in the first, allowing the Minutemen to build their largest margin of the game, 16 (30-14) just under five minutes before halftime. UM led 40-32 at the half.
Harper Williams' 15 points (ten and seven rebounds in the second half) led five scorers in double figures. Jerome Malloy led the reserves with 11 points.
The victory was sealed with a 13-0 run late in the game that put UM on top 75-56.
