UMass men's basketball headed to Mississippi State for first round of NIT
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 3/12/2012
AMHERST - It wasn't that long ago that Mississippi State looked like a lock for the NCAA Tournament. Instead the Bulldogs will be the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's first-round opponent in the National Invitation Tournament.
The Minutemen (22-11) are a No. 5 seed in one of four brackets in the 32-team NIT field. They will travel to Starkville, Miss., to face the Bulldogs (21-11) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a first-round game televised on ESPN2. Whoever wins will face the winner of No. 1 Seton Hall and No. 8 Stony Brook at a date, time and place to be determined.
UMass is in the same bracket at Drexel and former Minuteman coach Bruiser Flint. Two wins by each team would set up a showdown between UMass and the Dragons.
Success in the NIT historically is determined as much by a team's desire to play in the event as it is by talent.
UMass senior center Sean Carter will be playing in the postseason for the first time in his career and said the Minutemen are excited to continue their season.
“I'd like to keep putting my uniform on as long as I can,” Carter said. “I'm really excited. We definitely want to keep playing. We're eager to get back out there and show teams that we're capable of beating a (postseason) team.”
UMass coach Derek Kellogg agreed.
“The reaction of the team was fantastic. The guys on the team are excited to be playing postseason. They would have been disappointed if we weren't in the NIT,” Kellogg said. “I know with this team I could take them to Hubbard Park in Springfield for a men's league game tomorrow and they'd be ready to go.”
Mississippi State was ranked as high as No. 15 during the season and was No. 18 when it lost to Georgia in overtime on Feb. 11 to fall to 19-6. That started a five-game losing streak that knocked the Bulldogs out of the top 25 and out of NCAA Tournament consideration.
According to ESPN.com, Mississippi State was one of six teams in consideration for the last at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament before St. Bonaventure won the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Bonnies' automatic bid eliminated an at-large bid.
“Obviously we have a tough opponent in Mississippi State,” Kellogg said. “They're as talented as any team in the country and at times they've played as well as any team in the country. We're hopeful that on Tuesday they don't play so well.”
WILLIAMS HONORED - The absence of the Minutemen in the Atlantic 10 championship game did not stop the league from recognizing Chaz Williams. The sophomore point guard was named to the league's all-tournament team along with Andrew Nicholson and Demitrius Conger of St. Bonaventure and Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons of Xavier.
UMASS BRACKET CONNECTIONS - There are five teams with UMass connections that earned bids to the NCAA tournament. Former Minuteman head coach John Calipari and assistant coach John Robic are in the same roles at Kentucky.
Former UMass guard/forward Matt Glass, who transferred to Vermont, will play in his first tournament as a senior. Dwayne Killings, an Amherst native and UMass walk-on guard, is an assistant coach at Temple.
Former Minuteman assistant coaches Andrew Theokas and Tim Maloney are on the staffs at Western Kentucky and Baylor, respectively. Baylor's athletic director is Ian McCaw, who held that position at UMass.
UMASS RECORD VS. FIELD - UMass finished 5-3 against schools that made it to the NCAA Tournament. The Minutemen defeated Xavier, Temple, Saint Louis, St. Bonaventure and Davidson, and lost to the Bonnies, the Owls and Florida State.

This season the start of something good for UMass men's basketball
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 3/12/2012
AMHERST - To no one's surprise, the University of Massachusetts' name wasn't called when the NCAA's 68-team tournament field was unveiled Sunday night. The Minutemen's resume didn't quite stack up well enough with the at-large bid teams in the field so UMass will head to the National Invitation Tournament to continue its season.
But fast forward a year and it could be a different story. Last time the Minutemen went to postseason - the back-to-back NIT appearances in 2007 and 2008 - it was the completion of a great run. Gary Forbes, Etienne Brower and Dante Milligan were all graduating and as it turned out coach Travis Ford was leaving too. That run was the end of something.
Whatever happens in the NIT, the 2011-12 season feels like the start of something. The fans, who have itched for a reason to care, have started re-engaging with the Minutemen in large numbers. The attendance at the Mullins Center has begun increasing in significant numbers and UMass' performance in their home gym gave those fans reasons to keep showing up.
The Minutemen, who got better as the season went on, return everyone but Sean Carter. And while the senior center has been a valuable part of the team, his absence can be countered by the return of promising injured big man Cady Lalanne, the further development of freshman Maxie Esho and the arrival of Tyler Bergantino.
Esho's career has somewhat mirrored that of teammate Raphiael Putney. Both arrived with terrific raw athleticism and benefited from their respective redshirt years. Esho got better as the year went on and while his offense came in spurts, his ability to play at the front of the team's full-court press and guard multiple positions made him valuable. With a year of experience under his belt and another off-season in the weight room, Esho figures to get that much better.
Putney continued to narrow the gap between his present and his star potential. At times he was the best player on the floor and at times he carried UMass. If he can mature a little emotionally and physically, he has all-league potential.
Jesse Morgan appears to have figured out scoring at this level, and has emerged as one of the team's best on-ball defenders.
The most underrated Minuteman this season was Terrell Vinson. The junior's clutch play and toughness were reminiscent of the best days of Tyrone Weeks, and Vinson's improved 3-point stroke has completely erased his tough sophomore year.
It's easy to forget sometimes that Chaz Williams wasn't already a veteran player this year. He just played like one. His two remaining years of eligibility are a big reason for the optimism about the future.
If he doesn't improve at all, Williams is still a very valuable piece. If he does get better, UMass might have the best player in the Atlantic 10.
It's been a season of validation for UMass coach Derek Kellogg. Portions of the fan base had been hesitant to fully believe in the UMass alumnus who had come home. But Kellogg changed his style to a running and pressing approach that not only better fit his squad, but was more fun to watch. The team emerged as more cohesive. He's likely due a raise and an extension during the off-season as he heads into an important year for recruiting.
UMass should be one of the conference favorites next year. Other than Saint Joseph's, most of the A-10's top teams lose at least one big scorer, while the Minutemen bring back their top several options. UMass has become a dominant home team again and got better on the road as the season progressed. They played better late in games and scrapped to the end even in some losses.
There are obviously no guarantees. Playing with high expectations presents a new set of challenges that this team has never faced before. But facing those challenges is the next step for a program that appears to be headed on a good path, one that could lead to the word “Massachusetts” on NCAA brackets at this time next year.

UMass Advances In NIT With 101-96 Win At Mississippi State
Minutemen win in double-overtime and will face Seton Hall in second round.
From UMass Athletics, 3/13/2012
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Chaz Williams scored 28 and Sean Carter added a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds as Massachusetts outlasted Mississippi State, 101-96 in double overtime in the First Round of the National Invitation Tournament at Humphrey Coliseum Tuesday night.
UMass improves to 23-11 and advances to the second round where the No. 5 seed Minutemen will face No. 1 seed Seton Hall. The game will be played at Walsh Gymnasium on the Seton Hall campus sometime between Friday and Monday and will be announced by the NIT.
“People talk about signature wins and that was a big, big, big win for our program,” head coach Derek Kellogg said. “The kids kept fighting and playing. That was a big time win in here where they always put out a big time team.
“To come away with a victory over a team with a lottery pick was huge.”
Raphiael Putney added a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. The Minutemen outrebounded the Bulldogs 56-41. Additionally, UMass collected 21 offensive boards that they converted into a 24-7 edge in second-chance points.
Javorn Farrell was key off the bench with 16 points including a big three and driving dunk in the first overtime.
Mississippi State (21-12) was led by Arnett Moultrie's 34 points. Dee Bost had 20 points and 13 assists.
UMass was solid from the free throw line throughout the game, finishing 14-of-19 and 8-of-9 in the two overtime sessions.
UMass led much of the game until the Bulldogs staged a comeback late in the second half. After a Carter dunk with 11:29 left in the second half gave UMass a 62-51 lead, Mississippi State went on a 12-0 run holding UMass scoreless for the next 5 minutes, 38 seconds. A Brian Bryant lay-up with 8:05 to go gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game, 63-62.
Carter tied the game after that at the 5:51 mark on a free throw and the Minutemen were able to push the lead to four over the next three minutes.
A Moultrie jumper followed by a pair of free throws tied the game at 72-72 with 41 seconds to play. UMass had a chance to win in the final seconds of regulation, but a Williams driving lay-up missed the rim and Carter's tip-in attempt was reviewed and deemed no good after the shot clock expired.
UMass shot 43 percent for the contest and improved to 3-0 in NIT overtime games. The Minutemen also moved to 6-7 all-time in double-OT ball games, playing its first since 2005.
UMass men's basketball defeats Mississippi State in double overtime
By Paul Jones, Daily Hampshire Gazette Contributing Writer, 3/14/2012
STARKVILLE, Miss. - After missing a chance to clinch a win in regulation and another in the first overtime, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team finally pulled away in double overtime in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament on Tuesday night.
Chaz Williams and Sean Carter combined for 48 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Minutemen to a 101-96 victory over Mississippi State at Humphrey Coliseum.
Williams had a game-high 28 points for UMass (23-11) while Carter had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Raphiael Putney also had a double-double for the Minutemen with 10 points and a game-high 16 boards before fouling out.
Williams and his teammates used their quickness from start to finish to take control early on and also in the double overtime period.
“Speed is one of our biggest attributes as a team and we use our abilities to get out and run the floor,” Williams said. “We guys are not accustomed to losing and we didn't won't to lose tonight and brought our energy the whole game. We just tried to find any way we could to get a win tonight and that's what we did.”
The Bulldogs (21-12) trailed 70-66 with 1 minute, 29 seconds left in regulation but managed to rally late to send the game into overtime. Carter missed a pair of free throws with a minute remaining to help Mississippi State breathe a new life.
Jalen Steele knocked down a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs to tie the game in the closing seconds of the first overtime. With the score 90-90, Williams had a chance to win the game but his jumper was just off the mark.
But that disappointment did not linger long for Williams, who hit a critical 3-pointer in the double overtime period.
“We just stayed positive and didn't break away from each other,” Williams said. “We are a brotherhood and that is how we pulled it off.”
UMass scored the first four points in the second overtime and never trailed to extend its season. Seeded fifth, the Minutemen will now travel to top-seeded Seton Hall in the second round at a date and time to be determined by the NIT.
“I think that was huge,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “Our guys are excited to be playing in the NIT and they didn't want the season to end. This time of year that is the most important thing and when you have a young team that is growing, this a huge boost.”
Arnett Moultrie led all scorers with 34 points for Mississippi State, while Dee Bost added 20 points and 13 assists and Steele scored 17 points.
UMass dominated the backboards 56-41 and held the Bulldogs to 42.7 percent shooting.
“Any time you can compete and just be even (on the boards) with a team like Mississippi State is big,” said Kellogg. “That was a big challenge for us and for us to outrebound them was a testament to our will tonight. They had to go small because of our press and our speed. They couldn't play two bigs and that helped us on the boards.”
The Minutemen scored the first eight points of the game and built their lead to as many as 13 points in the opening half. Plagued by nine first-half turnovers and just 40.7 percent shooting, the Bulldogs did manage to get within four points in the first half.
But UMass steadily answered each Mississippi State run and took a 41-31 advantage into halftime. In the first half, the Minutemen shot 46.7 percent and held a 23-15 advantage on the backboards.
UMass continued to hold the lead for much of the second half and stretched it to 55-41 following a Williams' 3-pointer with just under 15 minutes left in regulation.
Trailing 62-51, the Bulldogs produced their best run of the night and scored 12 straight points. Mississippi State senior Brian Bryant capped off the run with a steal and layup to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the night at 63-62 with 8:01 remaining in regulation.
Seton Hall looms in second round of NIT for Minutemen
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 3/14/2012
After upending Mississippi State 101-96 in double overtime Tuesday night, the University of Massachusetts will try to continue its season against a team that's given it a lot of trouble in recent years. The Minutemen will play at Seton Hall in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament at a time, date and place to be determined.
The Pirates (21-12) survived a late putback attempt that rolled out to beat Stony Brook 63-61 in another first-round game Tuesday night. It ended an 11-game NIT losing streak.
Seton Hall, like Mississippi State, looked like an NCAA tournament team until late in the season. The Pirates lost their last two games of the regular season to Rutgers and DePaul and then lost to Providence in the Big East Tournament.
Seton Hall defeated the Minutemen 86-68 on Dec. 7, 2009, in Newark, N.J., and hammered UMass 104-79 in Amherst on Dec. 11, 2010.
The Minutemen and Pirates played a closed scrimmage before this season.
Seton Hall will host the second round matchup, but whether it's played at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., or Walsh Gym in South Orange, N.J., has not been decided yet. The game could be in any one of eight different ESPN TV slots from 9:30 p.m. Friday night to 11 p.m. Monday night, although the late Monday tip would likely be for a team in a more western time zone.
The 9:30 slot is the only one on Friday. The only Saturday game would be at 11 a.m.
There are three game slots on Sunday at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and two others on Monday at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
SEC IN NIT - UMass has now beaten three Southeastern Conference teams in the NIT. The Minutemen defeated Alabama in 2007 in the first round in the Mullins Center and Florida in the semifinals in 2008.
MISCELLANEOUS - The 23 wins by UMass is tied for eighth most in program history.
The win was the Minutemen's first double-overtime game since Jan. 26, 2005, when UMass won 82-78 at St. Bonaventure. It was the first win for UMass in overtime this season after losing at Rhode Island and Temple.
And it was the Minutemen's first time scoring 100 points since reaching triple digits in a 100-63 win on senior day against La Salle on March 5, 2008.
MILESTONES - Chaz Williams' six assists give him 218 this season, third most in a single season for a Minuteman. He's now 20 behind Cary Herer's 1989-90 total and 29 behind Edgar Padilla's 1995-96 school record 247.
Raphiael Putney's 16 rebounds were a career high.
