At UMass

2004-05 season

  • Played in all 28 games his freshman season, averaging 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in 9.5 minutes.
  • Two blocked shots in just four minutes at Dayton (3/1).
  • Made first collegiate start at LaSalle (2/19), scored four points in 11 minutes of action at center.
  • Well-rounded game vs. Fordham (1/19) with eight points, four rebounds and career-high four assists.
  • Had four big blocks at No. 21 George Washington (1/15), stuffing GW's top scorers Pops Mensah-Bonsu and T.J. Thompson twice each.
  • Named Dick Vitale's Diaper Dandy of the Week on ESPN and UMass/Dinn Brothers Athlete of the Week on Jan. 10, after the Xavier game.
  • Career game came against Xavier (1/8) in triple-overtime thriller, as he scored 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Also had nine rebounds for the second game in a row. Had 12 of the 21 points in the three overtimes with eight points in the final third OT.
  • Played 18 minutes vs. Temple (1/5), grabbing career-best nine rebounds, scoring four points.
  • Saw lots of time vs. Boston College (1/2), playing 15 minutes, scoring four points for fourth time this season.
  • Had game-saving blocked shot with five seconds left in 67-65 win over Boston Univ. (12/28).
  • Played key late minutes vs. Rider (12/23), scoring four points and grabbing five rebounds.
  • Scored four points, three rebounds vs. Davidson (12/19).
  • Grabbed six rebounds and scored four points vs. Yale (11/28).
  • In collegiate debut vs. Birmingham-Southern (11/23) made two free throws in the final minute to help secure win as Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freeman fouled out. Those foul shots were his first career points.

  • Played at Bristol Central High School for coach Pete Winninger
  • Scored 1,269 points during his high school career
  • As a senior in 2003-2004, averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game, with his team posting a 19-6 record
  • Nothing implied trivia: Was a teammate with Aaron Hernandez in the 2003-04 season3)
  • Averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds as a junior during the 2002-2003 season, while leading his team to a 26-2 overall record and a Class LL state semifinal appearance
  • Two-time first team All-State selection by the Hartford Courant, the New Haven Register and the Connecticut High School Coaches Association
  • Received interest from Central Connecticut, Rutgers, Washington, DePaul and Stanford4)

Personal

  • Got the “Big Deli” nickname in fourth grade. His summer basketball camp coach spotted him eating a big deli grinder, and it stuck with him.5)
