Jim McCoy scored a season-high 31 points, including two free throws to put UM ahead for good at 70-69 with 1:04 left in overtime, as the Minutemen assured themselves of at least a share of their first A-10 regular season championship.
The Mountaineers took an early three-point lead in overtime, but were unable to score in the final 2:32 to extend the Minutemen's longest winning streak since 1978 to seven games. Anton Brown led all scorers with five points in OT, including his second three-pointer of the game which gave the Minutemen their first lead in the extra session. After hitting just nine of 23 free throws in regulation, the Minutemen connected on 10 of 12 in their first overtime game of the season.
UMass never trailed until West Virginia's Chris Leonard hit a 19-foot jumpter with 55 seconds remaining for a 57-56 Mountaineer lead. But, the Minutemen bounced right back as Anton Brown nailed a trey 15 seconds later. West Virginia's Pervires Green put the game into the extra session with a pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining.
The Minutemen held the Mountaineers to a season low 32.9 percent shooting, including 29 percent (3-for-13) in OT. Will Herndon had 13 points and a season-high ten rebounds for his first double-double of the year.
