Minutemen seek to end four-game losing streak Saturday at Rhode Island

AMHERST - In each of the past two seasons, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team has derailed Rhode Island's NCAA Tournament hopes in the teams' second meeting of the season.
Two years ago it was a crushing pick from Matt Glass freeing Chris Lowe for a game-winning layup in a 72-71 UMass win at the Ryan Center. Last year it was Ricky Harris' basket with 3 seconds left that broke the Rams' hearts.
Neither team has an NCAA Tournament at-large bid at stake Saturday, and because the 2 p.m. game isn't as late in the season as it's been in recent years, the results at the Ryan Center won't be as dramatic.
But Rhode Island (16-9, 7-4 Atlantic 10) is chasing a National Invitation Tournament bid. The Minutemen (13-11, 5-6 A-10) are trying to end their four-game losing streak and ensure themselves a winning season. UMass could also earn a postseason bid of its own as the College Basketball Invitational and College Insider Tournament would likely extend a bid to a Minutemen squad at or above .500.
The Minutemen haven't won a game or played well since the last time they played Rhode Island. On Jan. 30, UMass bested the Rams 64-54 behind Anthony Gurley's 21 points.
The Rams have been better since then winning three of their last four. They beat Fordham, Dayton and Charlotte and lost at Temple.
Delroy James leads URI with 17.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Marquis Jones is next with 11.2 points and 3.6 assists per game. Jones' likeness will be on display Saturday as it's Marquis Jones Bobblehead Day.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said a good start offensively could go a long way.
“The biggest thing we're not doing is making baskets early in the game,” Kellogg said. “We've missed so many layups in the first few minutes of games. That's deflating to teams. We need to work on jump-stopping and finishing at the basket.”
Kellogg said that Raphiael Putney and Jesse Morgan, who played well off the bench Wednesday, would get a chance to contribute again. Sophomore Javorn Farrell said their play gave the team a lift.
“Jesse's game Wednesday got him going and that's going to help our team,” Farrell said. “It's definitely going to help us in our next game. It shows promise that they can help us against a good opponent. They went out and played free.”
Kellogg hoped Sampson Carter might get back on track as well.
“I'd like to see Sampson Carter back playing like he was at the beginning of the year,” Kellogg said. “I have to let him play through a few mistakes.”
NO RILEY? - Sophomore guard Freddie Riley, who missed Wednesday's game with a foot injury, will likely miss Saturday's game too.
“I'm pessimistic. He's still in a boot and hasn't been able to put any pressure on his foot or ankle,” Kellogg said. “We're looking at Saint Joseph's (Wednesday) for him coming back.”

UMass Guts Out 66-60 Win At URI
Four players score in double-figures in win.

KINGSTON, R.I. - Sensational defense and an uptempo style on offense catapulted UMass to a 66-60 win at Rhode Island on Saturday. The win ended a four-game losing skid for the Minutemen (14-11, 6-6 A-10) while the Rams (16-10, 7-5) saw their two-game win streak end. UMass limited Rhode Island to just 29.3 percent from the floor including just 1-of-19 from 3-point range.
The Minutemen outscored the Rams, 43-29 in the second half, keyed by a 23-6 run early in the period. Senior Anthony Gurley tallied 14 with 16 of his points coming in the final 20 minutes. Gurley was a demon on defense with 10 rebounds (nine defensive) and a career-high five steals. Redshirt freshman Raphiael Putney was clutch as he scored nine of his 11 points in the second half.
Sampson Carter had his best scoring game since Dec. 31 with 11 points. Rhode Island native Gary Correia also added 11 points and five assists.
Rhode Island cut what was an 11-point deficit to just three on several occasions in the final minutes, but the Minutemen were able to withstand the rush as Rhode Island missed many crucial free throws. For the game, Rhody was just 25-of-41 from the foul line (61 percent). UMass was whistled for 31 fouls, a season high.
UMass used that 23-6 run early in the second half as Putney scored seven straight points and Jesse Morgan capped the run with a 3-pointer with nine minutes left to give UMass a 46-39 lead.
The first half was an ugly one as UMass fell behind 32-23 at intermission. The teams combined to shoot 1-of-20 from 3-point range with URI missing all 11 of its treys.
UMass hosts Saint Joseph's on Wednesday at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet New England.
NOTES
- Anthony Gurley scored in double-figures for the 23rd time in 25 games this season with 16. He had done it in the first 22 games of the season.
- Gurley moved to 18th in career scoring as he now has 1,240 to pass No. 19 Donta Bright (1,229) and Al Skinner (1,235). Next on the list at No. 17 is Doug Grutchfield (1,257).
- Gurley had the first double-double this season by a UMass player, he had 10 rebounds. It was also his second-career game with 10 rebounds, the other came at Boston College in 2009.
- Raphiael Putney scored in double-figures for the second game in a row and third game this season with 11.
- Sampson Carter had his best scoring game since Dec. 31 with 11 points. It was his seventh game of the season in double-figures and 11 time in his career.
- Gary Correia scored in double-figures for the second time in three games, third time this season and fifth time in his career with 11 points. His previous career-high before 15 vs. George Washington last Sunday, came at Rhode Island in 2009, when he had 12.
- UMass held its sixth opponent in an A-10 win to below 40 percent from the floor, as URI shot just 29. 3 pecent.
- The Rams 1-of-19 from the 3-point range was the lowest by an opponent this season.

Minutemen break four-game losing streak with 66-60 win at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - After four straight losses, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team badly needed a good performance and a win Saturday.
The Minutemen got both at Rhode Island as they erased a double-digit deficit and hung on for a 66-60 win before 6,157 fans at the Ryan Center.
“That was a much needed-win for our team,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “I thought we picked up our defense and made some shots in the second half.”
Minuteman sophomore Sampson Carter said winning a tight game on the road was a huge lift to the team's spirits.
“Things like that bring us together. A tough win on the road like this, in front of a packed crowd, all we have is each other. So we just rallied together and came out with a win,” he said. “We needed this more than bad. We needed to stop the bleeding, get our confidence back, to feel like we can do good things. Now we're feeling good about ourselves.”
Nikola Malesevic hit a layup to open the second half, putting the Rams up 33-23.
Anthony Gurley, who entered the game in a scoring slump, missed his first 3-pointer of the half, but he made his second and then his third and then a layup as part of a 8-2 run that brought UMass within 35-31.
“I felt pretty good. In those types of situations, you've just got to stay confident, try to stay positive and do other little things to help your team win,” said Gurley, who led the Minutemen with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.
“… I'm very versatile. If I'm not scoring, I know I can do other things,” he continued. “We faced a little adversity in the first half, but we didn't get down in halftime. We knew we were playing hard and we came out in the second half with high intensity and we cut the lead.”
Raphiael Putney's strong play carried over from Wednesday. He scored nine of his 11 points in the second-half run that stretched to 27-7 as UMass pulled ahead 50-40.
Neither team was sharp down the stretch. They shot a combined 26-of-46 from the foul line in the second half and most of those came late.
Rhode Island used a 9-1 run to cut the Minuteman lead to 58-55 with 2 minutes, 32 seconds left. After Gurley and Delroy James each made one of two free throws, Gary Correia made two from the line to push the UMass lead to 61-56, and the Rams never got within one possession again.
“We lost four straight and we needed one,” said Correia, a Providence native who likely played his final game in his home state. “I had a lot of family out there, so it was just fun.
“We had fun, we played together as a team, and we really spread it around,” he added. “I'm happy for my teammates. It gives a lot of people confidence. I think a lot of guys' confidence was down because we lost four in a row. Maybe some people weren't playing as much. We got stuff from a lot of guys today and we just want to carry it on to the next one.”
Correia scored 11 points, the fifth double-figure game of his career and the second at the Ryan Center.
“When he comes to URI he's very focused,” Kellogg said. “This game probably means more to him than just about everyone on our team. Hopefully they rallied around him.”
The Minutemen (14-11, 6-6 Atlantic 10) host Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m. Wednesday
Putney and Sampson Carter each added 11 points for the Minutemen. Carter spent a few minutes early vomiting into a trash can and then returned to the floor to play his best games in weeks.
“I felt way better after I puked,” Carter said. “It was nothing. I told them while I was puking, 'When I'm done, I'm going in,'”
Freshman Jesse Morgan, who had a breakout game Wednesday, scored six points in 16 minutes.
“I think it's huge for our team. It really takes us to another level to have Jesse and Raphiael playing at the level that they are now,” Gurley said. “Two second-unit guys that can give us a spark off the bench. When we get into tournament time, we're really going to need them. We're really going to rely on that second unit.”
James led Rhode Island (16-10, 7-5 A-10) with 15 points, but the senior big man struggled. He shot 4-of-16 from the floor and 7-of-13 from the line while turning the ball over six times.
“A lot of it was their team defense,” Rhode Island coach Jim Baron said. “They really collapsed on him.”
NOTE: Junior big man Matt Hill was not with the team. His girlfriend gave birth to their son Camden on Friday.
