UMass men’s basketball returns to action against Siena

AMHERST — A University of Massachusetts men’s basketball team with a penchant for the dramatic is headed to the site of two of the program’s more dramatic postseason games.
It was Knickerbocker Arena when Tony Barbee hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in 1991 to force overtime in an 82-80 win over Siena in the National Invitation Tournament.
It was Pepsi Arena in 2000 when Shannon Crooks’ driving shot rolled around the rim and out at the buzzer as the Minutemen bench called for a foul in their 66-65 loss to the Saints in the first round of the NIT.
It’ll be the Times Union Center when the Minutemen, who’ve already won two games at the buzzer this year, take on Siena at 7 tonight.
The Saints are 2-4 after Sunday’s 72-66 loss at Maine. They lost their opener to Vermont 54-53 before edging Navy in overtime 54-49.
In the NUCDF Basketball Classic in San Diego, they fell to Cal State Northridge and San Diego, while beating Northern Kentucky, which just moved to Division I.
Siena was struggling last year too when the teams met. The Saints arrived at the MassMutual Center in Springfield at 3-5 and took a 10-point lead early in the second half before Chaz Williams and Freddie Riley sparked a comeback in an 82-78 UMass win.
O.D. Anosike had 22 points and 14 rebounds for Siena in that game. The 6-foot-8 senior forward is averaging 14.7 points and leads the nation with 14.3 rebounds per game this season.
The game will feature a matchup of two talented guards under 6-feet in Williams and 5-foot-8 Saints sophomore Evan Hymes, who is averaging 14.3 points and 3.0 assists per game.
This will be UMass’ first game in 10 days since the Minutemen (2-2) returned from Puerto Rico, where they beat Providence then lost to North Carolina State and Tennessee in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
“I’m hopeful that we were able to alleviate some of the things I thought hurt us against Tennessee in our last game out there and get the guys confident and playing together,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “I thought at times we drifted a little bit and didn’t share the ball as much as I would have liked. We had a few defensive breakdowns. I’m hoping that we play a little better Wednesday night or at least look a little better as a team and bring the energy that I think we have.”
Williams said the team is refreshed.
“It gave us time to fix things that we needed to work on. The time off was well-used. We got to points we needed to get to, to win these next couple of games,” Williams said. “We worked on playing together, playing UMass basketball. We got away from it the last couple of games. That’s not like us. That’s uncharacteristic of us. We’re looking to fix that. We were just off. That happens at the beginning of the year to most teams. It happened to us. Thank god it did. It gives us an opportunity to correct things. We did that and now we can move on.”
Kellogg said time was spent in practice to better utilize sophomore center Cady Lalanne as well as increase his stamina.
“Cady at times when he got tired was getting in the way a little offensively. We worked on getting him in different spots to get Chaz and those guys some better driving lanes,” Kellogg said. “When he’s playing and he’s energized, we’re really a better team. Some of it was realizing we have to get him in and out of the games a little quicker and out of foul trouble.”
Lalanne saw progress.
“I need to get mentally in basketball shape and physically in basketball shape too. Over the break I felt pretty good. Day by day I felt like I was starting to get better,” he said. “I feel like Coach is still trying to figure out where I fit in and I’m figuring out where I fit in too. But over the break I felt like he found out a lot more where I fit in and I found out too.”

ALBANY, N.Y. - Chaz Williams' 1,014th career point came with 3.3 seconds to go in the game and proved the biggest of the night as it clinched a 64-63 win for the UMass men's basketball team at Siena on Wednesday at the Times Union Center. Williams finished with a game-high 23 points and was instrumental in a second half 18-4 run which erased a 10-point halftime deficit.
The win improved UMass to 3-2 overall with each win coming in the final seconds of each game. The Minutemen will host Miami on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The Hurricanes will enter the game with a 4-1 record after defeating No. 13 Michigan State 67-59 on Wednesday.
Siena (2-5) led by as many as 17 points in the first half thanks to a strong shooting performance to start the game. The Saints hit 11-of-23 field goals including 7-of-11 three-pointers and held a 34-24 lead at the break.
Along with Williams' 23 points, Terrell Vinson poured in 17 points - just four shy of his career-high mark. Jesse Morgan added nine points, while Maxie Esho and Sampson Carter each hauled down 10 rebounds.
The Saints were led by a trio of players in double figures with Evan Hymes scoring a team high 15 points. O.D. Anosike had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Rob Poole scored 11 points.
The game started with the Minutemen struggling from the floor hitting just 3-of-16 shots in the first 10 minutes. A Trenity Burdine three-pointer at the 10:20 mark capped a 9-0 run to give Siena a 14-6 lead.
UMass cut the lead to four on a Vinson lay-up, but a Rich Adu three-pointer with 7:13 to go capped a 7-0 run pushing the score to 21-10.
Another Burdine three-pointer gave Siena its biggest lead of the game at 33-16 with 3:11 left in the first half.
The Minutemen finally hit their first three-pointers of the first half (2-of-14) in the final 2:13 with Freddie Riley and Williams both finding range from beyond the arc. With his trey at the 45 second mark, Williams became the 43rd player in program history to hit the 1,000-point plateau.
Just as the first half was a slow shooting affair for UMass, the second half proved a change of fortune with the Minutemen going on an 18-4 run in the first nine minutes highlighted by three three-pointers from Williams. Sampson Carter's put-back with 11:54 to go gave the Minutemen a 44-43 lead - their first lead since the opening two minutes of play. Just under a minute later, Williams' third trey of the stretch pushed the lead up to five, 48-43.
Siena clawed back to take a 62-58 lead at the 3:46 mark with a pair of free throws and a lay-up from Anosike. Carter's fastbreak lay-up a minute later pulled UMass back within two, but Anosike hit another free throw to push the lead back to three, 63-60, with 2:04 to go.
With just under a minute left, Williams pulled down a defensive rebound in the paint before throwing a deep outlet pass to Morgan whose lay-up made it a one-point game. A loose ball rebound on the next Siena possession was given to UMass. Williams drove around a screen at the free throw line to hit a floater with 3.3 seconds left in regulation giving UMass the 64-63 lead and closing an 8-3 run over the final five minutes.
After the teams traded timeouts, Siena attempted a home-run pass to set-up a potential game-winner, but Carter tipped the pass back over half court as time expired to seal the win.
UMass finished the game 26-of-69 from the floor and was 7-of-33 from beyond the arc. The Saints were 21-of-53 from the floor and 9-of-19 from deep. The Minutemen were also able to convert 16 Siena turnovers into 20 points and held a 10-0 advantage in fast break points over the Saints.

Chaz Williams nets winner as UMass edges Siena

ALBANY, N.Y. — Add Chaz Williams to the University of Massachusetts’ collection of last-second heroes.
After putting the Minutemen on his back for much of the second half as they erased a 17-point deficit, Williams fittingly delivered the decisive blow, a driving layup with 3.3 seconds left that gave UMass a 64-63 win over Siena, Wednesday at the Times Union Center.
“It was good to see our guys gut out another win,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “It wasn’t the way I envisioned it. It’s probably the strangest 3-2 (record) I’ve ever seen in my life. Three last second game winners is probably unheard of and unfathomable.”
The Minutemen are well versed in last-second plays, having won their first two games in the final five seconds. But in those games, the score was tied when UMass got the ball for the final possession. A miss meant overtime at worst. This time the Minutemen trailed 63-62 and faced a bad loss if they couldn’t add to their late-games heroics.
But Williams beat Evan Hymes off the dribble and laid the ball in.
“Coach had faith in me. He didn’t call timeout and left the game in our hands,” said Williams, who had 23 points, including 14 in the second half, eight rebounds and six assists. “I just had to go make a play.”
Siena (2-5) called timeout to set up its desperation play, then Kellogg called timeout when he saw how the Saints were positioned. After Siena called the third straight timeout, Trenity Burdine tried a touchdown pass from under his own basket, but Sampson Carter tipped it to Williams to seal the win.
“I was relieved to come away with a win on the road,” Kellogg said. “We’re very fortunate to be 3-2.”
Maxie Esho and Carter each added 10 rebounds for UMass, which hosts Miami, Saturday at 2 p.m.
Hymes led the Saints with 15 points.
UMass missed 22 of its first 30 attempts, clanging shots of the front, back and side of the rim, occasionally hitting no rim at all. Meanwhile, the Saints were 11 for 23, including 7 for 11 from 3-point range in the first half, as they built a 33-16 lead with 3:11 left until intermission.
But out of a timeout Freddie Riley hit a 3-pointer, UMass’ first after 12 misses, that launched an 8-1 run to end the half.
“We cut it to 10 and fixed some things in the locker room and we had momentum coming out of the locker room,” senior Terrell Vinson (17 points) said. “We came out and played faster and stopped letting them be so comfortable.”
Rob Poole (11 points) opened the half with a 3-pointer for Siena but the Minutemen’s momentum carried into the second half. They went on a 20-6 surge, capped by a Carter putback, that gave UMass a 44-43 lead with 11:54 left. Williams scored the next four points as the Minutemen looked like they might pull away.
But UMass expended a lot of energy digging out of its hole. Siena counterpunched and led 62-58 with 3:46 left.
Siena got a free throw from O.D. Anosike (13 points, 13 rebounds) between baskets by Carter and Jesse Morgan to set up Williams’ final sequence.
“We stick together,” Williams said. “We have that faith and confidence in each other to know we’re going to pull through at the end of the game.”

UMass bounces back after slow start against Siena

ALBANY, N.Y. — The joy that the University of Massachusetts men’s basketball team displayed after its buzzer-beating wins over Harvard and Providence wasn’t quite as abundant after escaping Siena 64-63 Wednesday.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg, who was “disgusted” at halftime, was “relieved” to survive a scare against the Saints.
“I guess we’ll take it. Hopefully these guys play better Saturday and into next week,” Kellogg said. “We just have to find our identity. We’re still searching for straws on how we have to play.”
With 10 days off after dropping the last two games of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Kellogg hoped his team would race out of the gates Wednesday, but instead it came out flat and fell behind 33-16.
“We didn’t do a good job of making shots and really hustling on defense to get our press established. The guys were unconfident. We didn’t play as hard as we could or should,” Kellogg said. “We were flat to start the game. We didn’t have a lot of energy. We didn’t have a lot of pop in our step. Making shots gives you a little bounce in your step and pressing and creating some turnovers gives you a little bounce. We have to play that way for 40 minutes. … I’m happy that we won. You want to learn from wins, but I wasn’t ecstatic about how hard we played to start the game.”
Senior forward Terrell Vinson echoed Kellogg’s sentiments.
“It’s not sad winning. But I wish we could do it in a better way,” Vinson said. “We need to find a way to close out games.”
CLUB GRAND — Chaz Williams became the 43rd UMass player to score 1,000 points in his career, a total that includes the 325 he scored as a freshman at Hofstra.
He’s the fifth Minuteman to reach the milestone after transferring, joining Will Herndon, Shannon Crooks, Gary Forbes and Anthony Gurley.
Williams needed nine points to reach the total. He shook off early shooting struggles and hit the magic number on a pullup 3-pointer with 47 seconds left in the half.
Williams, who has 689 points at UMass, had his best half of the season after intermission scoring 14 of his 23 points.
“He looked like he played at the end of last year. He had pretty good command of the game. He was making shots,” Kellogg said. “Just his energy, he was all over the floor on the defensive end. He hasn’t totally played like that this season. It’s nice to see those competitive juices come back.”
SWEET 17 — This was the third time in 2012 that UMass came back to win after trailing by 17 points. The Minutemen trailed Saint Joseph’s by 17 during the regular season and fell behind Drexel by 17 in the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals.
It’s the second time this season Siena blew a sizable lead. The Saints led Vermont by 16 before falling 54-53.
NEXT UP — UMass will face Miami, Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Mullins Center. The Hurricanes (4-1) upset No. 13 Michigan State 67-59 Wednesday in Coral Gables, Fla.
MISCELLANEOUS — Jesse Morgan didn’t lead the Minutemen in scoring or reach double figures for the first time this season. He finished with nine points on 4-for-15 shooting. … The attendance was 5,749.
