Camby's Bad Knee Can't Slow Minutemen
UMass 78, Southern Cal 63
From The Associated Press, 12/30/1995
With its star forward Marcus Camby out for almost the entire game with an injured knee, No. 1 Massachusetts spread its scoring around last night in posting a 78-63 victory over Southern Cal in the championship bracket of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu.
Camby was helped to the locker room 2 minutes 10 seconds into the game after he fell awkwardly when undercut by teammate Dana Dingle while trying for a rebound. A team spokesman said the 6-foot-11-inch forward suffered a bruised knee and that X-rays will be taken as a precaution.
Deprived of its top player, the Minutemen distributed the scoring with Edgar Padilla scoring 19, Donta Bright 17 and Carmelo Travieso 16. The reserves Tyrone Weeks and Inus Norville each added 9.
UMass (9-0) never trailed, getting off to a 10-4 lead on 3-pointers by Travieso and Padilla. The Trojans (7-3) got within 17-16, but UMass pulled out to a 32-23 lead by the half.
